On Nov. 8, we must elect candidates committed to addressing the challenges facing people aged 50-plus.

With inflation and the economic impact of the pandemic putting even more strain on Social Security, it has never been more important to make sure seniors can afford to pay for essentials like housing, food and health care. It’s time for a robust public debate about securing the future of the program.

Social Security is the only inflation-protected, guaranteed income source most Americans can count on in retirement. Our elected officials must protect and strengthen the benefits we’ve paid into and earned through years of hard work.

Over 350,000 Mainers rely on Social Security, many for 90% or more of their income. The program’s future is on the line, yet Congress has failed to take action to protect earned benefits.

I ask candidates, if elected, how they would protect earned Social Security benefits for the future.

Noël Bonam, Portland, AARP Maine state director
