The Twin City Thunder losing skid is over.
They stopped their winless streak of four games Saturday night with a 4-2 victory over the Boston Advantage in a USPHL NCDC game at the Lovell Arena in Rockland, Massachusetts.
The Thunder (8-7-0, 16 points) got a good start Saturday night.
“We played well in our defensive zone, in the first period,” Twin City Thunder coach Dan Hodge said. “We made some nice plays and killed some penalties; it was a good team effort. We were on our heels in the second period, but Chris Jackson played really well in net.”
Jackson stopped 25 shots for the Thunder.
Rookie forward Ben Portner scored his first two goals of the season and added an assist in the win.
“He’s coming into his own,” Hodge said of Portner. “He’s a (2004-birth year), it’s nice to see his game keep maturing.”
Forward Hunter Young scored a power-play tally midway through the first period, putting the Thunder up 1-0. Defensemen Blake Tierney and Nicholas Pomerleau recorded assists.
“It was good to get (a power-play goal),” Hodge said. “The penalty kill was even better. We had to (defend) a couple of 5-on-3s, (Boston) got a (power-play goal in the third period to make it 3-2), but we were able to kill the 5-on-3 part of that. Special teams came and delivered tonight.”
Late in the opening frame, forward Richard Davis gave Twin City a 2-0 lead. Linemates Trace Norwell and Ben Portner assisted.
Ethan Beaumont scored the lone goal of the second period to get the Advantage (9-7-0, 18 points) on the scoreboard.
Portner stretched the Thunder’s lead with under seven minutes remaining in the third period, beating Advantage goalie Nicholas Bevilacqua (26 saves).
The Advantage responded with 4:18 to play with Arik Altman finding the back of the net, putting Boston within a goal.
Portner potted an empty-net goal with about a minute to play for Twin City.
The Thunder wrap up the weekend slate Sunday night, facing the Junior Bruins at 6:40 p.m. in Marlborough, Massachusetts. The Bruins visit the Thunder at Norway Savings Bank Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m.
