Firefighters from four towns and the Maine Forest Service brought a large brush fire in Gorham under control on Monday.

The fire in an area off Gotham Lane and Route 25 was reported around 3:15 p.m. It drew firefighting crews from Gorham, Windham, Buxton and Standish. It was unclear how many acres burned.

A dispatcher for the Cumberland County Regional Dispatch Center said the fire was brought under control around 4:30 p.m. No homes were damaged by the fire.

The National Weather Service in Gray issued a warning early Monday about the potential for wildfires, saying that a dry air mass and gusty winds would move into the state. Those weather conditions, combined with dead and dry grass, leaves and twigs, have the potential to create uncontrolled fires throughout southwestern Maine.

Notice of an elevated fire danger for southern Maine was issued Monday by the forest service, which urged residents to use caution with any outdoor fires.

The cause of the fire in Gorham remains under investigation by the forest service.
