Caroline Bornemann scored on a layup with 1.4 seconds left to lift the University of Maine women’s basketball team to a 60-58 win over James Madison in its season opener on Monday night in Harrisburg, Virginia.
Anne Simon scored 17 of her 21 points in the second half for the Black Bears. She also had six rebounds. Bornemann had 11 points and eight rebounds, and Olivia Rockwood had 17 points, including five 3-pointers.
Kiki Jefferson had 28 points and 11 rebounds for James Madison.
(1) SOUTH CAROLINA 101, EAST TENNESSE STATE 31: Zia Cooke scored 17 points, Aliyah Boston had the 61st double-double of her career and defending national champion South Carolina opened with a dominating win at home.
(7) LOUISVILLE 87, CINCINNATI 68: Hailey Van Lith scored 28 points to lead the Cardinals to a home win over Cincinnati in a season opener for both teams.
(8) IOWA STATE 87, CLEVELAND STATE 54: Ashley Joens had 28 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, and Iowa State opened the season with a 87-54 rout of visiting Cleveland State.
(9) NOTRE DAME 88, NORTHERN ILLINOIS 48: Olivia Miles had 17 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and six steals to help the host Irish beat the Huskies.
(10) N.C. STATE 82, QUINNIPIAC 45: Jada Boyd scored 14 points as the Wolfpack led wire-to-wire in a season-opening victory over Quinnipiac at home.
(13) VIRGINIA TECH 101, MOUNT ST. MARY’S 45: Cayla King made a school record nine 3-pointers and scored a career-high 33 points, All-American Elizabeth Kitley added 17 points and the Hokies beat visiting Mount St. Mary’s in the season opener.
(15) OKLAHOMA 105, ORAL ROBERTS 94: Madi Williams scored 19 points, Skylar Vann added 18 and the Sooners opened the season by beating the visiting Golden Eagles.
(16) LSU 125, BELLARMINE 50: Angel Reese scored 31 points on 11-of-14 shooting and grabbed 13 rebounds in her debut with Tigers, who won at home.
(17) MARYLAND 88, GEORGE MASON 51: Abby Meyers scored 19 points in her debut as the Terps beat the visiting Patriots.
Meyers, an AP honorable mention All-American at Princeton and one of nine new Terrapins, made 5 of 6 from 3-point range.
(18) BAYLOR 88, LAMAR 50: Jaden Owens had a career-high 12 assists to go with 11 points for her first career double-double and host Baylor pulled away for a season-opening win over Lamar.
(20) OREGON 100, NORTHWESTERN 57: Freshman Grace VanSlooten scored 20 points and host Oregon downed Northwestern to start the season.
(21) CREIGHTON 78, (23) SOUTH DAKOTA STATE 69: Lauren Jensen scored 17 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter and visiting Creighton pulled away from South Dakota State in the only Top 25 matchup on the opening day of the season.
(22) NEBRASKA 100, OMAHA 36: Isabelle Bourne scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Nebraska opened the season by beating visiting Omaha.
(24) PRINCETON 67, TEMPLE 49: Kaitlyn Chen scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds, Ellie Mitchell added 12 points and 15 boards, and the host Tigers spoiled the debut of Owls Coach Diane Richardson.
Princeton won its 16th straight regular-season game dating to last season.
MIAMI: Coach Katie Meier was suspended for the first three games of the season while the school cooperates with an NCAA probe.
Meier said Sunday that she is also cooperating with the NCAA. Neither she, the school nor the NCAA has released specifics of the probe, other than Miami calling it “an enforcement matter.”
MEN’S BASKETBALL
NEBRASKA 79, MAINE 66: Sam Griesel scored 18 of his 22 points in the second half as the Cornhuskers beat the Black Bears in their first game under first-year coach Chris Markwood, in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Keise Tominaga added 19 points for Nebraska.
Gedi Juozapaitis led Maine with 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Kristians Feierbergs added 16 points and had six rebounds. The Black Bears were within two points with 15:17 left before Nebraska pulled away.
(1) NORTH CAROLINA 69, UNC WILMINGTON 56: Caleb Love and RJ Davis scored 17 points apiece and North Carolina began a season of grand expectations by pulling away from visiting UNC Wilmington.
Armando Bacot added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Tar Heels, who were perhaps most impressive at the defensive end. UNCW shot just 29.8 % from the field.
(2) GONZAGA 104, NORTH FLORIDA 63: Player of the year candidate Drew Timme scored 22 points, Julian Strawther added 16, and host Gonzaga used a big first-half run to beat North Florida in the season opener.
Anton Watson had 10 points, four rebounds, four assists and five steals for Gonzaga, which won its 68th consecutive home game, the nation’s longest streak.
(3) HOUSTON 83, NORTHERN COLORADO HOUSTON 36: Marcus Sasser scored 21 points, J’Wan Roberts added 12 points and six rebounds, and the host Cougars opened the season by beating the Bears.
(4) KENTUCKY 95, HOWARD 63: Antonio Reeves scored 22 points, CJ Fredrick had 20 and the host Wildcats opened the season by beating Howard with All-American Oscar Tshiebwe and two other players sidelined.
Tshiebwe, the consensus national player of the year, had a procedure last month on his right knee and anticipated being back for the opener.
Point guard Sahvir Wheeler (right leg) and sophomore forward Daimion Collins (personal reasons) were also out.
(5) BAYLOR 117, MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE 53: Adam Flagler scored 21 points to lead six players in double figures as host Baylor opened its 20th season with Coach Scott Drew.
(5) KANSAS 89, OMAHA 64:Jalen Wilson had 19 points and 11 rebounds, Gradey Dick added 23 points in his debut, and the host Jayhawks began defense of their national championship without suspended Coach Bill Self in routing the Mavericks.
Self served the first of a four-game punishment along with assistant Kurtis Townsend as part of the fallout from a 2017 federal investigation into college basketball corruption.
(7) DUKE 71, JACKSONVILLE 44: Jeremy Roach scored 16 first-half points to help the host Blue Devils Duke open Jon Scheyer’s coaching tenure with a win over the Dolphins.
This marked the first coaching debut for the Blue Devils since Mike Krzyzewski won his debut against Stetson on Nov. 29, 1980 – part of a college-basketball record 1,202 victories in a career that included leading Duke to five NCAA championships.
(9) CREIGHTON 72, ST. THOMAS 60: Baylor Scheierman made back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second half to give the host Bluejays the lead for good in beating the Tommies.
Arthur Kaluma scored 17 points, Trey Alexander had 12 and Scheierman added 11 as the Bluejays won their 25th opener in 26 years.
(10) ARKANSAS 76, NORTH DAKOTA STATE 58: Trevon Brazile had 21 points and 12 rebounds in his debut with Arkansas, and the Razorbacks won at home in the season opener for both teams.
(11) TENNESSEE 75, TENNESSEE TECH 43: Tyreke Key came off the bench to score 17 points and lead the Vols over the visiting Golden Eagles in the season opener for both teams.
(13) INDIANA 88, MOREHEAD STATE 53: Preseason All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis and freshman Malik Reneau each scored 15 points, helping the host Hoosiers to a season-opening win over the Eagles.
(14) TCU 73, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 72: Mike Miles hit a 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining to finally put host TCU ahead to stay in a win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff, which built an early 20-point lead in the season opener for both teams.
(15) AUBURN 70, GEORGE MASON 52: Wendell Green Jr. scored 16 points and K.D. Johnson and Johni Broome each had 12 to lead the host Tigers over the Patriots.
(16) VILLANOVA 81, LA SALLE 68: Caleb Daniels scored 24 points to make Coach Kyle Neptune a winner in his debut in the program’s first game since Hall of Fame coach Jay Wright’s sudden retirement, and the host Wildcats beat the Explorers.
(18) VIRGINIA 73, NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL 61: Kihei Clark and Reece Beekman sparked a 15-2 second-half run, and host Virginia surged past North Carolina Central after blowing a 16-point, first-half lead.
Armaan Franklin led Virginia with 21 points in the season opener for both teams.
(22) MICHIGAN 75, PURDUE FORT WAYNE 56: Hunter Dickinson scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds and freshman Jett Howard added 21 points to help the host Wolverines top the Mastodons in the season opener.
(24) DAYTON 73, LINDENWOOD 46: Mustapha Amzil scored 14 points, DaRon Holmes II and R.J. Blakney each had 13 and the Flyers opened the season by beating the Lions.
