Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts was placed on injured reserve on Monday with an ailing right knee.

Coach Arthur Smith added that it’s too early to know if Pitts, the No. 4 overall draft pick last year and a Pro Bowl pick as a rookie, will need surgery. He will miss at least the next four games.

”(General manager) Terry (Fontenot) and I will talk through the next 48 hours, and until we get confirmation from the full set of medical opinions and until everybody’s on the same page, then we’ll decide if we need to make a move or not,” Smith said.

Pitts was hurt in the third quarter of Sunday’s 27-24 win over the Chicago Bears. He caught an 18-yard pass over the middle and was hit low by Eddie Jackson. He stayed down on the field for a few seconds before walking off the field under his own power.

The Falcons (5-6) will likely turn to MyCole Pruitt to replace Pitts as Atlanta prepares to visit Washington (6-5) this weekend.

Smith said Sunday that the team wouldn’t know the severity of Pitts’ injury until he gets a couple of medical opinions. Pitts ranks second on the Falcons with 28 catches for 356 yards and two touchdowns. His numbers are down this season with Atlanta deploying a run-first offense.

GIANTS: Rookie wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson will miss the rest of the season after tearing an ACL during a loss to the Detroit Lions.

Coach Brian Daboll announced the injury less than 24 hours after the second-round draft pick hurt his knee late in the 31-18 loss to the Lions. The injury came in Robinson’s best NFL game: He had nine catches for 100 yards, both career highs.

Coming into the game at MetLife Stadium, the Kentucky product had 14 receptions for 127 yards and a touchdown. This is his second knee injury this season. He hurt an MCL in the season opener and missed four games.

Fellow receiver Sterling Shepard also tore an ACL in a game at MetLife against Dallas on Sept. 26.

BRONCOS: Melvin Gordon’s fifth fumble of the season was his final one for the Broncos.

Denver announced it waived the veteran running back amid continued ball security issues. Gordon was in his third season with the Broncos and eighth overall in the NFL.

He had started every game for Denver since the team lost Javonte Williams to injury in Week 4, but his workload varied by the week. In recent weeks, he had split carries with Latavius Murray. On Sunday against the Raiders, Gordon lost a fumble at the Raiders’ 1-yard line that cost the Broncos a chance at extending a first-half lead just before halftime.

It was Gordon’s fifth fumble of the season. He lost one on the goal line against Seattle in the team’s season opener and had a fumble returned for a game-swinging touchdown against the Raiders in Week 4.

PANTHERS: Another week, another quarterback conundrum for Carolina Panthers interim head coach Steve Wilks.

Wilks said he’ll wait until Wednesday to determine who will start Sunday against the Denver Broncos, with Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker all in consideration.

“I want to be able to dive into a little more evaluation on Denver’s defense and determine who gives us the best opportunity to win that football game,” Wilks said.

Mayfield, the top overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, is coming off yet another poor performance Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, completing 21 of 33 passes for 196 yards with two interceptions while failing to lead the Panthers to a touchdown.

He’s 1-5 as the team’s starter.
