OXFORD — Three months after Smokin’ Dave’s Backyard BBQ & Grill closed its Main Street Norway restaurant, Dave and Marcia Nelson have returned to their roots, serving their popular blends of smoked meats and hearty sides from a food truck in Oxford.
Smokin’ Dave’s opening day was Nov. 11 at 674 Main St. in Oxford, their new spot, and again on Nov. 26. Menu offerings have been limited as the Nelsons focused on establishing their new process and getting used to their new, smaller kitchen.
Starting Dec. 1, the truck will be open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m., or until sold out.
Some weekends Smokin’ Dave’s will be on the road at special events; on Dec. 10 the Nelsons plan to set up at Poland’s annual Christmas tree lighting celebration at the town hall. Hours that day will be 4-7 p.m.
Nelson said they are seeing lots of familiar faces returning and new customers as well.
“We are taking a lot of phone orders,” he told the Advertiser Democrat. “I’m not sure how common that tends to be with food trucks.”
With a couple weekends worth of business Smokin’ Dave’s has started expanding its menu. Steak and cheese sandwiches are now available, as are some side dishes.

The lot at 674 Main Street will be Smokin’ Dave’s new base in Oxford Hills. By spring there will be picnic tables set up to provide more of a dine-in experience. But Nelson expects people will find the food truck at other locations and during community events.
“We’d like to work the dragway again,” he said. “And we’re on the lookout for other places to set up, pretty much any day of the week.”
Even after the restaurant closed, Smokin’ Dave’s continued its catering business, sometimes working alongside multiple food trucks. The Nelsons serve private and community functions within an hour’s drive of Norway and Oxford.
