Donavan Villeneuve-Houle scored with 7:59 left in the second period to give the University of Maine men’s hockey team the lead in a 3-1 win over Vermont on Friday night in Burlington, Vermont.

The Catamounts (5-10-1, 2-9 Hockey East) took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Eric Gotz. The Black Bears (4-8-1, 1-5-1) tied it when Reid Pabich scored from Grayson Arnott and Jakub Sirota 1:41 into the second period.

Cole Hanson added an empty-net goal for the Black Bears.

Victor Ostman stopped 16 shots for Maine, while Gabe Carriere stopped 38 shots for Vermont.

NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 4, SOUTHERN MAINE 3: Bernie McGovern scored with 2:36 left to lift the Pilgrims (5-5, 3-3 NEHC) to a win over the Huskies (1-8, 1-6) in Gorham.

NEC took a 3-0 lead in the first period before Southern Maine tied it with a goal in each period. Azam Jiwa, Zach Desmarais and Curtis Judd all scored for the Huskies.

Spencer Kozlowski made 38 saves for the Pilgrims, while Kyle Penton and Mason Palmer combined for 30 saves for the Huskies.

UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 4, SUFFOLK 1:  Jared Christy had a pair of goals to lead the Nor’easters (4-3, 4-2 Commonwealth Coast) to a win over the Rams (1-5, 1-5) at Biddeford.

Juraj Elias and Garrett Devine also scored for UNE, while Will MacNeil scored for Suffolk.

Billy Girard had 10 saves for the Nor’easters, while Jaret Bovarnick and Cal Wilcox combined for 40 saves for the Rams.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

MAINE 3, BOSTON UNIVERSITY 0: Lilli Welcke and Alyssa Wruble scored in the second period as the Black Bears (10-10, 7-6 Hockey East) took a 2-0 lead and beat the Terriers (6-11, 5-8) in Boston.

Welcke added an empty-netter in the third.

Andrea Brandli had 25 saves for Boston University, while Brooklyn Oakes turned aside all 18 shots she faced for Maine.

SUFFOLK 2, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND 0: Shana Cote opened the scoring for the Rams (7-3, 6-1 Commonwealth Coast) midway through the first period and Jesse Kennedy provided an insurance goal in the third as they blanked the Nor’easters (5-5, 4-2) in Boston.

Delanie Corcoran recorded 50 saves for UNE, while Lily O’Neil stopped all 19 shots she faced for Suffolk.

SOUTHERN MAINE 4, NEW ENGLAND COLLEGE 0: Madison Chagnon scored to break a scoreless tie late in the first period as the Huskies (5-5, 5-2 NEHC) cruised to a win over the Pilgrims (2-6-1, 0-4-1) in Henniker, New Hampshire.

Madelyn McLeish scored in the second period, while Georgie Shaw and Maddy Young added goals in the third.

Hannah Podvey had 45 saves for New England College, Haley McKim turned aside all 22 shots faced for the Huskies.

COLBY 3, BOWDOIN 2: Stephanie Lane scored from Jillian Mazzocca with 3:48 left in the third period to lift the Mules (4-0, 1-0 NESCAC) to a win over the Polar Bears (2-3, 1-2) in Brunswick.

Abby Wick scored in the second period and Meg Rittenhouse in the third for Colby. Gia Massari and Brett Stoddard scored for Bowdoin.

Paige Bolyard had 19 saves for Colby, while Dani Marquez stopped 32 shots for Bowdoin.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

PRINCETON 65, MAINE 51: Kaitlyn Chen had 15 points, five rebounds and five assists as the Tigers (3-2) beat the Black Bears (3-4) in Orono.

Julia Cunningham added 13 points, while Grace Stone had 10 points and Ellie Mitchell had 12 rebounds for Princeton.

Adrianna Smith had 15 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Maine.

(3) UCONN 98, PROVIDENCE 53: Lou Lopez Senechal and Aubrey Griffin scored 18 points apiece and the Huskies (6-0) beat the Friars (6-3) in Storrs, Connecticut, in the Big East Conference opener for both teams.

Azzi Fudd scored 17 points, Aaliyah Edwards had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Nika Muhl added 12 assists – her fourth straight game with at least 10 assists – for unbeaten UConn.

Grace Efosa scored 11 points and Logan Cook finished with 10 points and eight rebounds for Providence.

(13) CREIGHTON 67, (25) VILLANOVA 46: Molly Mogensen scored 22 points, Morgan Maly added 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting and the Bluejays (7-0, 2-0 Big East) beat the Wildcats in Villanova, Pennsylvania.

SOUTH FLORIDA 70, (22) TEXAS 65: Sammie Puisis scored 25 points and Elena Tsineke scored 22 and the Bulls (8-2) beat the Longhorns (3-4) in Austin, Texas..

MEN’S BASKETBALL

(6) BAYLOR 64, (14) GONZAGA 63: Adam Flagler hit a pair of 3s as the Bears (6-2) scored the final eight points of the game to rally past the Zags (5-3) in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Gonzaga’s Rasir Bolton missed a wild, driving layup try at the buzzer.

The Bears trailed 63-56 before Flagler hit a 3-pointer with 1:33 left. Flagler’s 3 with just over a minute to play cut Baylor’s deficit to 63-62.

After a Gonzaga shot clock violation, Flagler’s 3-point attempt for the lead was off the mark, but teammate Jalen Bridges was fouled by Drew Timme on the rebound attempt. Bridges hit two free throws with 16 seconds left for the lead.

The Zags had a final chance when Bolton caught an inbounds pass near his own foul line with 4.6 seconds remaining. He drove the lane, but his off-balance shot went high off the glass and missed as the buzzer sounded.

(15) AUBURN 93, COLGATE 66: K.D. Johnson scored 16 points, Wendell Green Jr. and Johni Broome both had 14 and the Tigers (8-0) defeated the Raiders (5-5) in Auburn, Alabama.
