LONDON — Patrick Gardner scored 27 points and Kam Farris made the go-ahead basket with 21 seconds left as Marist beat Maine 62-61 in men’s basketball on Sunday when the Black Bears missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
Gardner added nine rebounds for the Red Foxes (4-4).
Kellen Tynes finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds and two steals for the Black Bears (4-4), who led 59-53 with 2:49 remaining but managed just two free throws the rest of the way. Maine also got 12 points from Ja’Shonte Wright-McLeish and 11 from Peter Filipovity.
CARNEGIE MELLON 79, BOWDOIN 66: The Tartans (6-1) broke a 45-45 tie with an 18-5 run midway through the second half and went on to beat the Polar Bears in (3-4) in the UAA/NESCAC Challenge at Rochester, New York.
James McGowan lead Bowdoin with 13 points. Afamdi Achufusi and Michael Simonds each finished with 12.
EMORY 80, COLBY 66: A 15-0 run in the second half fueled a comeback win for the Eagles (6-1) against the Mules (8-1) in the UAA/NESCAC Challenge at Waterville.
Three players scored in double figures for Colby: Max Poulton with 16, Noah Tyson with 14 and Will King with 12.
BRANDEIS 68, BATES 58: The Judges (7-1) held the Bobcats (3-4) to nine points in the final eight minutes as they pulled away for a win in the UAA/NESCAC Challenge at Waterville.
Jahmir Primer scored 18 points and Steph Baxter had 13 for Bates.
SOUTHERN MAINE CC 78, MASSASOIT CC 52: Jack Pyzynski led SMCC with 20 points as the SeaWolves (9-4) cruised past the Warriors (5-4) in South Portland.
DeSean Cromwell added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
(4) ARIZONA 81, CALIFORNIA 68: Azuolas Tubelis and Oumar Ballo combined for 42 points and 19 rebounds, and host Arizona (7-1, 1-1 Pac-12) bounced back from its first loss by holding off California (0-9, 0-2).
Tubelis had 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Ballo – the Division I leader in field-goal percentage – made 7 of 10 shots en route to 17 points, with seven rebounds and four blocks.
The Wildcats were coming off an 81-66 loss Thursday at Utah, just their fifth in 44 games under second-year coach Tommy Lloyd.
(5) PURDUE 89, MINNESOTA 70: Zach Edey set career highs with 31 points and 22 rebounds, powering host Purdue (8-0) past Minnesota (4-4) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
NEBRASKA 63, (7) CREIGHTON 53:Derrick Walker scored a career-high 22 points as Nebraska (6-3) upset Creighton (6-3), the highest-ranked opponent the Cornhuskers have beaten on the road since 1997.
Nebraska beat the Bluejays for the first time in 14 regular-season meetings in Omaha since 1995.
(13) TENNESSEE 95, ALCORN STATE 40: Olivier Nkamhoua scored 20 points and host Tennessee (7-1) routed Alcorn State (3-6).
VIRGINIA TACH 80, (18) NORTH CAROLINA 72: Justyn Mutts scored 27 points to lead Virginia Tech (8-1) over visiting North Carolina (5-4) in an ACC opener.
Mutts scored 21 of his points in the second half for the Hokies, who built an 18-point, second-half lead and then held on to hand the Tar Heels their fourth consecutive defeat.
(19) KENTUCKY 73, MICHIGAN 69: Cason Wallace scored 14 points and Oscar Tshiebwe had a double-double to lead Kentucky (6-2) over Michigan (5-3) at the O2 Arena in a London showcase of two marquee American college sports teams.
NORTHWESTERN 70, (20) MICHIGAN STATE 63: Boo Buie scored 20 points and visiting Northwestern (6-3) beat Michigan State (5-3) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
Chase Audige added 15 points and Ty Berry had 13 for Northwestern.
Mady Sossoko and A.J. Hoggard each had 12 points for Michigan State.
(21) UCLA 65, OREGON 56: Jaylen Clark and freshman Amari Bailey scored 14 points each and host UCLA (7-2, 2-0 Pac-12) rallied in the final four minutes to hold off Oregon (4-5, 1-1) for its fourth straight win.
The Bruins hadn’t had a big scoring run all game until they pulled away late.
(23) IOWA STATE 71, ST. JOHN’S 60: Jaren Holmes scored 14 points and Aljaz Kunc added 12 as host Iowa State (7-1) handed St. John’s (8-1) its first loss of the season.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
RHODE ISLAND 63, MAINE 43: Maye Toure led the Rams (7-1) with 13 points in a win over the Black Bears (3-6) in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.
Freshman Jaycie Christopher scored a season-high 12 points for Maine. Sera Hodgson added 10.
MASSASOIT CC 72, SOUTHERN MAINE CC 63: The SeaWolves (8-2) were outscored 41-27 in the second half as their eight-game winning streak was stopped by visiting Massasoit (3-1).
Tara Flanders paced SMCC with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Jaylyn Bartolome contributed 12 points, Maddy York scored 11 and Ashleigh Mathisen had 10.
BOWDOIN 56, WPI 44: Sydney Jones scored 14 points and Megan Tan added 11 for the Polar Bears (4-1) in a win over the Engineers (5-2) at Worcester, Massachusetts.
(2) STANFORD 84, (23) GONZAGA 63: Cameron Brink had 14 points and a season-high 16 rebounds and Brooke Demetre made five 3s and scored 17 points, leading host Stanford (10-1) past Gonzaga (7-2).
The Cardinal have won five straight games after falling to top-ranked South Carolina in overtime on Nov. 20.
(4) OHIO STATE 82, RUTGERS 70: Rebeka Mikulasikova scored a career-high 31 points and Taylor Mikesell added 30 to help visiting Ohio State (8-0) beat Rutgers (4-6) on a day hat the Scarlet Knights honored former coach C. Vivian Stringer.
The school dedicated the court to Stringer, who retired after last season.
Stringer was in attendance and at halftime her family and many former players gathered on the court to celebrate the dedication of it. Rutgers officials gave Stringer a piece of the floor that her teams played on as a gift.
(5) INDIANA 65, ILLINOIS 61: Mackenzie Holmes of Gorham scored 23 points, including a go-ahead layup with 37 seconds left, and host Indiana (9-0) got past Illinois (3-7) in their Big Ten opener.
Indiana had not trailed in the second half of any game this season before going back and forth in the closing minutes with Illinois (3-7).
After Holmes’ basket made it 62-61, Sydney Parrish made one foul shot and Sara Scalia added two more to seal the win.
(7) NOTRE DAME 74, (3) UCONN 60: Olivia Miles had 21 points and eight rebounds for host Notre Dame, and UConn star Azzi Fudd was injured in a collision with a teammate as the Fighting Irish (7-1) handed the Huskies (6-1) their first loss of the season.
Fudd, who came in averaging 24.0 points per game, exited in the final minute of the first quarter following a collision with teammate Aaliyah Edwards. She returned midway through the second quarter to play four minutes, but sat the rest of the day, going scoreless on two shots over 13 minutes.
(9) VIRGINIA TECH 59, TENNESSEE 56: Kayana Traylor scored 18 points to lead visiting Virginia Tech (8-0) over Tennessee (4-5) in a Jimmy V Women’s Classic matchup.
(11) LSU 85, TULANE 72: Angel Reese scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds and Jasmine Carson scored 21 as visiting LSU (9-0) beat Tulane.
ST. JOHN’S 66, (13) CREIGHTON 62: Jayla Everett scored 20 points and host St. John’s (8-0, 2-0 Big East Conference) remained unbeaten by handing Creighton (7-1, 2-1) its first loss.
(14) ARIZONA 77, NEW MEXICO 60: Jade Loville made 10 of 13 shots, including a career-best six 3-pointers, and scored 27 points to lead visiting Arizona (7-0) over the Lobos (4-4).
Shaina Pellington added 19 points for the Wildcats, who had their lowest output of the year and won by less than 20 for only the second time this season.
(17) MICHIGAN 77, NORTHWESTERN 66: Emily Kiser and Laila Phelia scored 18 points each and host Michigan (9-0) shut down Northwestern (4-4) in the final minutes in a Big Ten opener for both teams.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE 67, (18) LOUISVILLE 49: Savannah Wheeler had 23 points, six rebounds and five assists, Courtney Whitson added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Middle Tennessee (5-2) upset Louisville (5-4).
NEBRASKA 90, (20) MARYLAND 67: Jaz Shelley scored 29 points, including six 3-pointers, Nebraska (6-3) dominated the second half, and the Cornhuskers defeated host Maryland (7-3).
(21) BAYLOR 79, HOUSTON CHRISTIAN 35: Freshman guard Bella Fontleroy came off the bench to score 17 points and grab 11 rebounds and Baylor (6-2) romped to a victory over visiting Houston Christian (3-4).
(22) TEXAS 92, SOUTHERN 43: Shaylee Gonzales scored 22 points, Sonya Morris added 20 points, and host Texas (4-4) routed Southern (2-5).
SETON HALL 82, (24) MARQUETTE 78: Lauren Park-Lane scored 17 of her 31 points in the fourth quarter, Sidney Cooks added 23 and host Seton Hall (6-4, 2-0 Big East Conference) upset Marquette (7-2, 1-1).
It was a game of runs and the Pirates had the last big one, scoring nine-straight late in the third quarter.
FOOTBALL
COLORADO: Deion Sanders is taking over as head coach at Colorado, bringing his charisma and larger-than-life persona to a beleaguered Pac-12 program that’s plunged to the bottom of college football.
The deal was announced Saturday night by Athletic Director Rick George.
The Pro Football Hall of Famer has been at Jackson State, a historically Black college that plays in the NCAA’s second tier of Division I, since 2020. Sanders has guided the Tigers to consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference titles.
The Tigers beat Southern in the SWAC championship game Saturday in Jackson, Mississippi, and a few hours later Colorado announced he was coming to Boulder.
LIBERTY: Liberty is hiring Coastal Carolina’s Jamey Chadwell to replace Hugh Freeze as head coach.
A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press that a deal was done but spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement from Liberty was still in the works.
Freeze left Liberty after four years to accept the same position at Auburn.
