DIXFIELD — Charlie Houghton paced the reigning Class C champion Dirigo boys basketball team to a 70-52 season-opening win over Lisbon on Saturday.
Hougthton scored a team-high 16 points. Dakota Tompkins contributed 15 points to the Cougars’ (1-0) victory, while Trent Hutchinson dropped in 14 points and Airick Richard finished with 12.
Lisbon’s Levi Tibbetts led all scorers with 24 points. Gavin Grenier and Chase Mailhot each added eight points for the Greyhounds (0-1).
MOUNTAIN VALLEY 59, TELSTAR 29: Zach New topped three Falcons (1-0) in double figures in their season-opening win over the Rebels (1-0) in Rumford.
New put up 16 points, while Ben Desalle scored 12, including 10 in the first quarter, and Brayden Duguay finished with 11.
Wyatt Lilly led Telstar with 12 points, and Evan Leach scored 10.
LAKE REGION 74, POLAND 60: Jackson Libby scored 24 points, Jacob Chadbourne had 23, and the Lakers (1-0) used a 12-0 fourth-quarter run to pull away from the Knights (0-1) at Naples.
Ian Brogan chipped in 14 points for Lake Region.
Hayden Christner led Poland with 15 points. John Patenaude scored 14 and Shane Yorkey added 12.
BOYS HOCKEY
SOUTH PORTLAND/FREEPORT/WAYNFLETE 5, FRYEBURG/LAKE REGION/OXFORD HILLS 0: Richard Gilboy notched a hat trick and Tobey Lappin had two goals and an assist as South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete opened its season with a win over Fryeburg/Lake Region/Oxford Hills at Troubh Ice Arena.
Hewitt Sykes set up the first two goals. The Red Riots scored three times in the second period to open up a 4-0 lead.
Jasper Curtis earned the shutout, making 29 saves. Nate Metcalf stopped 31 shots for the Ice Cats.
THORNTON 3, ST. DOMINIC 2: Gavin Pellerin and Brady Pecora scored less than two minutes apart in the third period to send the Golden Trojans (1-0) past the Saints (0-1) in a season opener at Biddeford Ice Arena.
Evan Beaudette gave Thornton Academy the initial lead 50 seconds into the game, and Eric Jones tied it for St. Dom’s in the second on a power-play goal, with assists from Ben Dumais and Tim Ouellette.
Dumais drew the Saints within one in the final minute of the game, with Ouellette and Miles Frenette assisting.
Pellerin also had an assist on Beaudette’s opening goal, and Kyle Lesieur, Cam Cyr and Jake Fleurent each added an assist for Thornton. Porter Krause earned the win in goal for the Golden Trojans.
Jayden Lynn stopped 41 of 44 shots for St. Dom’s.
MT. ARARAT/LISBON/MORSE 6, CONY/MONMOUTH/ERSKINE/HALL-DALE/WINTHROP 4: The Eagles (1-0) overcame deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to beat the Rams (0-1) in a season opener at Bowdoin College’s Watson Arena.
Bryce Poulin and Gerek Theriault tallied two goals apiece for Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse/Hyde, Zander Kirk notched a goal and an assist, and Jameson Fowler also scored. Jacob Fullerton provided two assists and Jason Wolf and Will Dudley each added one.
Cooper Clark netted a hat trick for Cony/Monmouth/Erskine/Hall-Dale/Winthrop, while Ray Dineen recorded a goal and an assist.
Sam Young made 15 saves in goal for the Eagles, and Landon Foster stopped 21 shots for the Rams.
EDWARD LITTLE 6, BANGOR 4: Campbell Cassidy recorded a hat trick and an assist in the Red Eddies’ win over the Rams at Sawyer Arena in Bangor.
Brody Keefe scored a goal and assisted on two others, while Peyton Dyer had a goal and an assist. Tanner Berry-Hart also scored for Edward Little, and Gavin Levesque and Andrew Clements each had a pair of assists.
Michael Mascone scored twice for Bangor and Philip Mascone had a goal and an assist. Marc-Andre Perron also scored for the Rams. Goalie Cody McCue made 20 saves in the loss.
Edward Little goalie Gage Ducharme stopped 26 shots.
GIRLS HOCKEY
EDWARD LITTLE/LEAVITT/POLAND 8, GREELY/GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 0: Alyssa Prosser and Kylee Spugnardi each recorded three goals and an assist as the Red Hornets (1-2) picked up their first win of the season with a shutout of the Rangers (0-5) in Auburn.
Prosser, Ella Labelle and Spugnardi all scored in the first period for Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland, then Prosser and Spugnardi scored 39 seconds apart in the second period to make it a 5-0 game. Gianna Castagna also scored in the middle frame, to go along with her assist of Labelle’s goal earlier in the game.
Spugnardi completed her hat trick 20 seconds into the third period, and Prosser did the same with seven minutes left.
Emily Quinell earned the shutout in goal for the Red Hornets, while Maddie Singer manned the net for Greely/Gray-New Gloucester.
