CANTON — Selectmen are working to resolve a resident’s complaint of four-wheelers using a section Alden Hill Road as an ATV trail.
At the Nov. 10 board meeting, Mark Densmore said he has complained to the board for more than a decade about speeding and reckless ATV riders going by his home.
Alden Hill Road runs between Canton, east of the Androscoggin River, to the Crash Road in Jay.
About a dozen residents of the road told selectmen Thursday that they have no problem with ATV riders using a stretch of the road.
Selectman Kristi Carrier said she met with Androscoggin Land Trust representative Amy Soper recently to discuss how the trail could be rerouted to get it off part of Alden Hill Road.
“There are only two landowners,” she said, “the Land Trust and the town of Canton, so we’re looking at potentially bypassing about a mile” of Alden Hill Road to get riders away from houses. “So far, this is just a starting point, it’s just talking at this point and looking at options.”
Richard Cousins, who lives on the road, said this past year was probably the lowest use of that trail in a long time. “But years back there was a lot of loud side-by-side ATV users, and occasionally you’ll get a loud dirt bike.” He said relocating the trail would mean he and others living on the road would not legally be able to access the trail from their yards.
Selectman Michelle Larrivee reassured Alden Hill Road residents that selectmen were looking looking at all of the options to try to come to a resolution agreeable to everyone. “Respectfully we’re all taxpayers so everybody’s complaint is valid,” she said.
After asking Public Works Foreman Paul McKenna about the condition of the road considering ATV use, Selectman Don Hutchins said, “I care about the road and if you say the road is not being damaged then I guess my biggest concern isn’t there anymore.”
In other business, Robyn McClintock of the Cemetery Ladies said the town will hold a wreath-laying ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, to honor 43 veterans buried at Hillside Cemetery at 25 Canton Point Road. It’s the fourth year of the Wreaths Across America ceremony, she said.
