OTISFIELD — A Casco man died Wednesday night when his vehicle flipped onto its roof and burst into flames near the intersection of Powhatan and Forrest Edwards roads.

The driver, 43-year-old Kenneth Haviland of Leach Hill Road died at the scene, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy James Urquhart said.

Haviland was driving a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee west on Forrest Edwards Road at a high rate of speed when it went off the road at the intersection of Powhatan Road into woods and struck a large tree. The Cherokee rolled onto its roof and burst into flames, Urquhart said.

Early reports said at least one person was trapped inside the wreckage. Police and fire crews worked around the downed power lines, attempting to free the person. Rescuers also searched the area around the vehicle in case other passengers had been ejected. None were found.

The crash was in the area of 493 Powhatan Road, a short distance from where Powhatan Road runs along Pleasant Lake.

Central Maine Power cut power to the area while lines were repaired. About 1,000 customers were affected.

Oxford County Sheriff’s deputies were joined at the scene by fire and rescue crews from Otisfield. Assistance was requested from departments in other towns, including Oxford and Casco.

After investigators reconstructed the crash, the roads were reopened Thursday morning.

The crash investigation continued Thursday.
