BETHEL — The Telstar Middle school Nordic team is on its way to a great season after a rocky start both literally, lack of snow, and figuratively, they are working with their third coach. The team of eight, embodies the Telstar motto of R.A.P.:  Respect for the coaches, community, administration, and parents working diligently to make their season happen;  Acceptance of the circumstances including early lack of snow, mismatched equipment, and irregular schedule due to coaching issues; and Perseverance, being one of their most important qualities.

Three times a charm!  After two canceled middle school races, Nonstop Nordic relocated to Pine Hill at Gould on Saturday the 21. Thanks to Gould Academy, eight inches of fresh snow, no wind, and bright sunshine the day was ideal for racers and spectators alike.

Lillian Smith placed 2nd for the girls and overall with a time of 14:17.7 on the 3.1 K course. Tess Smith, on her new skis, followed her sister to place 4th (16:16.3). Osie Hedden, a first-time Nordic ski racer, skated her way to 9th (19:48.2), and Isla DeCato, a returning 7th grader,  finished 10th in 20:05.9.

Reece Pierce, a returning 8th grader and a seasoned skier, placed 2nd for the boys. Reece effortlessly crossed the finish line in 15:14.0. Davon DeGruttola skated an amazing race to finish 7th with 17:39.1.

Justin Fereshetian from Maine West Project Play has taken the team under his wing. With his experience as a Nordic competitor and coach, we’ll be seeing great things from Telstar Middle School. Look for more great results from next week’s Sassi Jr., taking place at Rumford’s Black Mountain where Eliza Nellis and Will Doyle hope to join the team on the snow.
