Tyler Brinkmann of Falmouth gets big air during his run in the pro division of Saturday’s skijoring competition at the Topsham Fair harness track. A longtime competitive Alpine skier, Brinkmann says there’s little in common between the two sports, mostly because in skijoring “there’s a spirited animal pulling you.” That’s Belle, a quarter horse ridden and owned by Mel Merchant of Mercer. “Everybody says that barrel racing is really Belle’s favorite, and that skijoring is more of a winter, on-the-side thing,” said Merchant. ”But no, skijoring is her thing: She loves it.” Pulled by a variety of horses, Saturday’s skiers and snowboarders navigated slalom markers, banked turns and jumps for the best time down the full length of the Topsham track’s homestretch.
