A Wells woman died of head and chest injuries Sunday after the snowmobile she was operating crashed into trees in Johnson Mountain Township in northern Somerset County, according to officials.

Tanya Hanson, 50, was driving a 2018 Ski-Doo Renegade Enduro on ITS 87, part of the Maine Interconnected Trail System, when she failed to negotiate a left turn in the trail and crashed into trees on the right side of the trail, according to Mark Latti, spokesman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.

The crash occurred as Hanson was following her husband, who also was on a snowmobile, according to a statement Latti distributed Monday to the news media.

“An oncoming snowmobiler witnessed the crash and contacted 911,” Latti said in the statement. “The Maine Warden Service responded along with Jackman Fire and Ambulance and Redington-Fairview Ambulance. Emergency medical personnel performed CPR but Hanson passed away near the scene.”

Hanson’s body was taken to Giberson Funeral Homes in Bingham, according to Latti, who said the crash remained under investigation and new information would be released when available.

A LifeFlight of Maine helicopter was called to the scene, but the call was canceled after Hanson died, according to Latti.
