The Tri-Town Optimist Club of Mechanic Falls, Minot and Poland has named Kaiah McGarry of South Paris its Regional School Unit 16 student of the month for January.

McGarry, an eight grader from Bruce M. Whittier Middle School in Poland, is described by teachers as a kind and humble student who stands out as a leader and a clear choice for the Optimist award, according to a news release from Jenny Rose, RSU 16 Adult Education director and McKinney Vento homeless liaison.

McGarry is a focused student who is always eager to do well. People listen when she speaks, because she is a thoughtful and quiet voice of reason that empowers others, Rose added.
