A man from Massachusetts died Sunday morning after he veered off the Maine Turnpike around mile marker 18.5 in Wells, according to the Maine State Police.

Kevin P. Mahoney, 22, of Dracut, Massachusetts, was driving a black 2008 Buick Lacrosse southbound on the turnpike at about 8 a.m. when he drove off the right side of the highway and into the woods, crashing into a tree. Mahoney was the only occupant in the vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and speed appeared to be a contributing factor, according to a statement from Maine Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Shannon Moss.

The crash is under investigation. The turnpike remained open, and the flow of traffic was not affected.

Wells Fire and Rescue and the Maine Turnpike Authority assisted at the scene.
