The Twin City Thunder have their backs to the wall after dropping a 4-1 decision to the South Shore Kings in Game 1 of the USPHL NCDC North Final on Friday in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
The Thunder will have to win Saturday’s Game 2 to extend their season to a decisive Game 3 on Sunday. All of the games will be played at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Midway through the first period Friday, Nathan Stachowiak put the Kings up 1-0 with his first goal of the postseason. Joey Melo and Owen Drury had the assists.
Joseph Kramer stretched South Shore’s advantage to 2-0 when his shot beat Thunder goalie Trey Miller (26 saves) with 6:48 remaining in the first.
Less than three minutes later, Trace Norwell continued his strong playoff run for the Thunder when he potted his fifth goal of the postseason. Ben Portner and Lewiston’s Nicholas Pomerleau had the assists.
Jack Barbro, who will play at Bowdoin in the fall, gave the Kings a 3-1 lead midway through the second period.
Drury picked up his second assist when Melo extended South Shore’s lead to 4-1 with 11:52 remaining in the third.
Jacob Torgner stopped 24 shots for the Kings in the win.
Game 2 is Saturday at 7 p.m. in Foxboro.
