Rio Gomez pitched four perfect innings in relief of Sterling Sharp and the Portland Sea Dogs took the lead in the fifth inning on their way to a 5-2 Eastern League win Friday against the Hartford Yard Goats in Hartford, Connecticut.

The Sea Dogs broke a 1-1 tie when Corey Rosier scored on a throwing error after a double steal with Phillip Sikes. Sikes then scored on a Nick Yorke groundout.

Portland added two runs in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Matthew Lugo and an RBI single by Rosier.

TENNIS

Two-time Grand Slam champion Simona Halep has been accused of a second doping offense by the International Tennis Integrity Agency for irregularities in her Athlete Biological Passport.

The charge announced Friday “is separate and in addition to” the provisional suspension Halep received last year after failing a drug test during the U.S. Open in August, the ITIA said.

Halep is a 31-year-old from Romania who reached No. 1 in the WTA rankings in 2017. She won Wimbledon in 2019, beating 23-time major champion Serena Williams in the final, a year after winning the French Open.

The ITIA said the new charge “was based on an assessment” of Halep’s biological passport profile by an expert panel. Such passports provide a baseline reading of substances in an athlete’s body and are considered a way to help chart doping.

During a provisional suspension, a tennis player is ineligible to compete in, or attend, any sanctioned events.

ITALIAN OPEN: Anhelina Kalinina of Ukraine beat Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova 7-5, 5-7, 6-2 in Rome to reach the biggest final of her career and dedicated the victory to her war-torn country.

Kalinina and Kudermetova did not shake hands after the semifinal, which lasted nearly three hours.

Toronto won a playoff series for the first time in nearly two decades before losing to the Florida Panthers in a disappointing second-round showing.

Dubas, 37, took over as general manager in May 2018. Toronto set single-season records for wins and points in 2021-22, and went 221-109-42 overall in his tenure.

NFL: The Pittsburgh Steelers signed quarterback Mitch Trubisky to a three-year contract, giving the club some long-term stability behind starter Kenny Pickett.

CYCLING

GIRO D’ITALIA: Einer Rubio won a shortened and weather-affected 13th stage for his first victory in a Grand Tour, while Geraint Thomas remained in the pink jersey as overall leader.

Rubio crossed the line just ahead of fellow escapees Thibaut Pinot and Jefferson Alexander Cepeda after a tough climb to the summit finish at Crans-Montana, Switzerland. Because of adverse weather, the riders started past the planned halfway point, and the stage was slashed from 199 kilometers to 80 kilometers.

Thomas remained two seconds ahead of Primož Roglič and 22 ahead of João Almeida.
