The PGA Tour is returning to Maui to start the new season with the Sentry Tournament of Champions at Kapalua, five months after deadly wildfires destroyed nearby Lahaina and claimed at least 97 lives.

Commissioner Jay Monahan said last month he hoped the tournament could be an inspiration for Maui and Lahaina, about 10 miles from where the PGA Tour has started its year since 1999.

The tour sent a memo to players Thursday that it will be back at Kapalua for the Jan. 4-7 opener. The tour previously had said Hawaii Gov. Josh Green told them to “go forward” with plans for the tournament and volunteer registration opened.

EUROPEAN: Tom Kim of South Korea handled difficult weather conditions to card a 7-under 64 and take a one-shot first-round lead in the French Open at Saint-Quentin-Eb-Yvelines.

Englishman Matthew Southgate bogeyed the final hole to post a 65 along with countryman Richard Mansell, Spaniard Alfredo Garcia-Heredia and Swede Joakim Lagergren, although Lagergren did not have time to play the 18th hole.

EUROPA LEAGUE: Liverpool, which failed to reach this season’s Champions League, marked its return to the Europa League with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory against LASK in Linz, Austria.

West Ham also had to come a goal down to defeat newcomer TSC Bačka Topola from Serbia 3-1 at London.

SPAIN: One month after a sexism scandal, players from the country’s Women’s World Cup-winning team said a turning point has been reached in their fight for equality.

A deal reached after a marathon meeting this week between the players, federation and government mediators that players said would lead to real reform inside their beleaguered national soccer federation.

HOCKEY

NHL: After years of hype, highlights and piles of points — so many points at every level — Connor Bedard arrived at his first NHL training camp with the Chicago Blackhawks.

“Once you’re on the ice, it’s hockey, and you try not to be starstruck or whatever, anything like that,” Bedard said. “But yeah, waking up and talking to my parents last night about it, it’s pretty special. To be here with the fans in this city and everything, it’s remarkable. I feel super fortunate. It’s definitely a dream right now.”

MAN INDICTED: A Nevada grand jury indicted a man on felony charges, alleging he threatened to carry out a mass shooting in June at a Stanley Cup final game in Las Vegas.

The six-count indictment handed down this week in state court charges Matthew DeSavio, 34, with threatening an act of terrorism, burglary and stalking.

SENATORS: The transfer of the Ottawa Senators to a group led by Michael Andlauer was unanimously approved by the league’s board of governors.

The Senators said Andlauer will assume control of the team’s operations immediately.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Satou Sabally of the Dallas Wings was named the league’s Most Improved Player after averaging career bests with 18.6 points, 8.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists.

Sabally, a fourth-year pro, set a franchise record with seven consecutive double-doubles early in the season and finished with 14 double-doubles — fifth in the league — and her first career triple-double.

TRACK AND FIELD

RUNNER ARRESTED: Zane Robertson, a banned New Zealand Olympic runner, was arrested in Kenya over allegations of sexual assault and possession of an unlicensed AK-47 assault rifle and ammunition at his home in the East African nation, police said.

Police obtained a court order to keep Robertson in custody for five days while they question him and investigate. He appeared in a courtroom for a short hearing. Police said he would be charged under the sexual offenses act and for illegal possession of a firearm after the investigation is complete.
