Agnes C. (Inkpen) Kane

LITCHFIELD – Agnes C. (Inkpen) Kane passed away Friday Sept. 29, 2023 at her home, surrounded by family. One of 13 children, she was born to the late Jack and Mable Inkpen on May 10, 1938 in Lewin’s Cove, Newfoundland (Canada).

After graduating high school, Agnes was a schoolteacher in Newfoundland from 1955-1957, followed by a career as a Parachute Rigger in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1957-1959. She met her husband, Mike, in Argentia Newfoundland while serving in the U.S. Navy. They relocated to the United States, eventually settling in Maine to raise their family.

Agnes loved to travel, and Mike’s career in the Navy allowed them the opportunity to visit Spain, Germany, The Azores, and a very special trip to stay with dear friends in the country of Norway. After his retirement, the adventures didn’t end.

Mike and Agnes have been, “snowbirds” for the last 15 years. They have many lifelong friends in their slice of heaven, Flowerwood Park in St. Petersburg, Fla. Agnes was a cornhole master and people were not disappointed to draw her as a partner in their weekly tournaments.

In 2018, Mike and Agnes purchased a motor home and spent a summer journeying to Alaska. They traveled from Maine to Washington in the lower continental United States, boarded a cruise ship to Alaska, and returned home to Maine via the Canadian Provinces.

Agnes was most happy when traveling “home” to Newfoundland every summer. There she enjoyed spending time at her cabin on Great Pond picking blueberries and watching the wildlife with her brothers, sisters and friends.

She will be remembered fondly as the caretaker of her beautiful lakeside home. Mike and Agnes built their dream home in 1991. It has been a gathering spot for generations: her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren have all welcomed friends to enjoy the beauty of the lake and her bountiful gardens.

Agnes enjoyed gardening, crocheting, Bingo and going to the casinos. She was especially fond of traveling the state of Maine looking for the best deals at yard sales with her dear friend, Alice.

Agnes is survived by her husband of 59 years, Mike Kane; daughter, Lori Metayer and son, Les Kane; grandchildren, Kayla, Katrina, Michael, Eric, Bryan, Lauren; and eight great-grandchildren; brothers Theodore, Levi, Gilbert and Derek; and sisters Judy, Linda, Sandra and Vera.

She was also the sister of the late Helen, Bernice, Jackie and Harold.

For the last several years, Agnes has received the most loving care from the staff at the Alzheimer’s care unit in Gardiner and most recently the Glenridge nursing home in Augusta. The Maine General Home Care and Hospice team were essential in facilitating a smooth transition for Agnes to be home and pass in peace with her family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation on Monday Oct. 2, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Crosman Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Lisbon Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Church, 67 Frost Hill Ave, Lisbon Falls. Committal will follow at Litchfield Plains Cemetery, Litchfield.
