SOCCER

On a day when English soccer mourned the passing of Bobby Charlton, Manchester City and Liverpool got back on track with wins in the Premier League.

The death of Charlton, the 1966 World Cup winner and perhaps England’s and Manchester United’s greatest ever player, was announced during the halftime break of Saturday’s five afternoon games. He was 86.

An extravagantly gifted attacking midfielder with a ferocious shot, Charlton was the leading scorer for both United (249 goals) and England (49 goals) for more than 40 years until being overtaken by Wayne Rooney.

“The whole football world is losing a legend, a big personality, a giant,” Manchester United Manager Erik ten Hag said ahead of his team’s emotionally charged visit to Sheffield United in the evening kickoff.

United’s players laid a wreath in the center of the field and took part in a period of applause before the game started.

Liverpool got two late goals from Mohamed Salah  to beat crosstown rival Everton 2-0 in an early kickoff, before City ended a two-game losing streak in the league with a 2-1 win over Brighton.

Arsenal then came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Chelsea to sit level on points with Manchester City atop the standings.

The Niners are hopeful he can return after the bye week when San Francisco visits Jacksonville on Nov. 12.
