Leonard “Len” P. Greaney

RUMFORD – Leonard “Len” P. Greaney passed away at the age of 90 at Rumford Hospital surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2023. He was born in Newburyport, Mass.

He attended West Newbury High School where he played varsity sports, as well as Northeastern University for Business Administration. He served in the USAF during the Korean War as an electronics counter measure technician for a squadron of B-52 Bombers. Continued his education in Electrical Engineering at Santa Rosa College where he played Varsity Basketball and baseball.

Employed in the Electronics and Technology Industry for over 30 years and retired from Digital Equipment Corporation. He was married for 50 plus years to the love of his life, Mary Hoyt. Adopted two young sisters from Colombia, SA to make his family complete.

He enjoyed sailing, golfing, water sports, and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Hochflieger Ski Club for 10 years where he made lifelong friends. He was passionate about honoring veterans and created an extensive Oxford County “Veteran Database for all wars.” He commissioned a new Veterans War Memorial in Rumford for Oxford County Vets “Buried in Distant Places,” as well as a new “Vietnam War” memorial. Len served in several leadership capacities as Rumford Town Manager, Chairman of Regional School Consolidation, President of Rumford Historical Society, Candidate for Maine State Senate, and an advocate for fair contracting with Volume Water extractors.

He was predeceased by his father, John Greaney, his mother Gertrude (Sheehan) Greaney; his siblings John Greaney and Janice Ciaraldi. He is survived by his wife Mary Greaney; his daughter Kendra Campbell and her husband Kevin Campbell, his daughter Sarah Greaney, his daughter Kathy Greaney, his son Leonard Greaney, Jr. and Donald Greaney; and sister Kathleen Lampropoulos. He also leaves behind several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He will be fondly remembered as a loving father and husband who touched many lives.

Calling hours will be at Meader and Son Funeral Home at 3 Franklin Street, Rumford, Maine on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A celebration of life and graveside service will be held in the spring.
