A concert of classical music featuring violinist Mary Hunter and cellist Karen Jung playing music by Bach, Bartok and Glière, is scheduled for the Oasis of Music beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29, at Trinity Commons in Lewiston. This will be the last Oasis performance until September.
Hunter taught music history and theory at Bates and then Bowdoin for nearly 40 years. She plays in the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, in various chamber ensembles, including the Buttonwood Trio; She is also a member of the Maine Middle Eastern Orchestra, the Maine Takht Ensemble and the Tarab Trio. She is currently teaching strings in Lewiston. Middle School.
Karen Jung serves as co-principal of the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra and is the Music Librarian and Coordinator of Research and Instruction Services at Bowdoin College. She received a master’s degree in cello from the Indiana University School of Music. She performed professionally in recording sessions, chamber groups, orchestras, and national Broadway touring productions, and served as principal cellist of the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra. Jung can be heard on nationally-released recordings of music ranging from classical and folk music to new age and contemporary Christian music.
The Oasis of Music is a weekly music series of performances of roughly thirty minutes, running from September to May. Admission is free, with donations accepted. The musical genres vary greatly, in largely, but not exclusively, acoustic formats. Trinity Commons is located at 247 Bates St., Lewiston. For more information, call 207-344-3106.
