LEWISTON — State Rep. Kristen Cloutier, a Lewiston Democrat, is seeking a fourth term representing the 94th District, which includes much of downtown and areas on the eastern side of Bates College.
The only other contender in the district is Republican Kendil Elizabeth Snow-Black. The general election is Nov. 5.
Cloutier, the assistant House majority leader, said that in Augusta she worked with her colleagues to provide disaster relief payments to over 500,000 Mainers, free breakfast and lunch for all public school students and property tax relief.
She said during the Legislature’s most recent session, she worked closely with Gov. Janet Mill’s office to create the Maine Mass Violence Care Fund that aims to offer a continuum of care for the victims and families of the mass shooting that occurred in Lewiston as well as helping potential future victims of mass violence in Maine.
“There is no uniform timeline for grief, and the emotional pain and trauma resulting from such tragedies can last a lifetime,” Cloutier said in a prepared statement. “Establishing a continuum of care through this fund ensures that victims can receive the trauma-informed services they need to support their healing process.”
Cloutier, who helped care for her mother who died of Alzheimer’s in 2018, was a leader in creating the state’s paid family medical leave program.
“This program will help Mainers balance caring for themselves, their children, and their sick and aging family members, while at the same time helping our employers attract and retain workers that are desperately needed,” Cloutier said.
Cloutier said she favors more collaboration in politics.
“The divisiveness in today’s politics is preventing us from solving problems. I will continue to work hard to find common ground and focus on what matters most to the people of Lewiston,” she said.
Cloutier works as associate director for center operations and program coordinator for Project Pericles at Bates College’s Harward Center. She is a former city councilor and served as mayor after the 2019 resignation of former Lewiston Mayor Shane Bouchard.
