TOPSHAM — A year ago, the Leavitt Area High School track and field team took home half the hardware from the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Small School championships.

On Friday night, the Hornets made it a clean sweep.

Leavitt ran away with both the boys and girls team titles in front of a large crowd at Mt. Ararat High School. The girls tallied 147 points, followed by Maine Central Institute (97) and Waterville  (76).

Leavitt won the boys KVAC Small title last spring, while the girls finished runner-up to MCI.

“The boys have won the past couple of years, but we’ve been trying to chase it for the girls. It was awesome to pull it out for both this year,” said Leavitt head coach Jamie Juntura.

The Leavitt boys finished with 163.5 points, followed by Winslow (129.5) and Lincoln Academy (109). Leavitt sophomore Mason Henderson had a strong day, picking up a victory in the 100-meter dash (10.93) and finishing second in the 200 and the 400.

“I came in with a (personal record) of 11.08 and came in under 11 for the first time (in the 100),” Henderson said. “I’m really excited for that. It’s a big step in my track accomplishments.”

Leavitt also had victories in boys events from Stephen Pierre (110 hurdles), Gabe Durazo (3,200), Maddox Demers (javelin, shot put) and Noah Gibbs (high jump). The Hornets also had a win the 4×100 relay (44.58) with the team of Henderson, Logan Berube, Drake Bartley and Brock Poulin.

The Winslow boys had a strong outing, particularly from senior Joey Richards, who broke two KVAC records, winning the 200 (22.01) and 400 (48.71) titles. Braden Rioux also picked up a win in the 1,600 (4:40.17). The Black Raiders also had victories in the 4×800 (8:46.93) and 4×400 (3:39.16) relays.

Senior Serae Fish led the Leavitt girls with three victories. But earlier in the day, Fish was actually upset with her victory in the high jump, as she finished with a height of 5 feet.

“It doesn’t feel good,” Fish said. “I was hoping to break the PR and school record. The current school record is 5-2, I’ve been hoping for 5-3, trying for it. But it just hasn’t been quite there yet.”

Fish took her anger with the high jump out on the 100 hurdles moments later, winning with a time of 16.15 seconds and later won the 300 hurdles in 48.96 seconds.

Haley Marston (11:42.62) won the 3,200 for Leavitt, which also won the 4×800 (10:25.30) and 4×100 relays (51.79).

“We came into (the meet) looking for seed times and looking for energy, hopefully we got that,” Juntura said. “We’re going to have to get some rest for some of our folks, but hopefully we come back on Monday strong (for the week).”

The meet provided an opportunity for athletes to have bragging rights over the local competition, while continuing to hit new personal records and keeping eyes on the ultimate prize, winning at the state championships next weekend.

“I came in with high expectations, and do what I can do, I came into the circle and just went in and did it,” said Lawrence junior Zoe Hutchins, who picked up victories in the girls shot put (34-1) and girls discus (99-0). “I’ve been working toward this meet all season, building up to it. I haven’t had great distances leading up to this, but it doesn’t matter. Up until this meet is where it matters, and next week is when it matters.

Hutchins was followed by teammates in the top four spots with Nadia Morrison (91-9) in second ahead of Kiera Day (89-7) and Payton Cole (88-10).

Lawrence swept the discus event, as senior Zebadiah Hannah set a new personal record with a throw of 157-9 to win the boys event.

“I hit 150 last meet, and hit 157-9 this meet,” Hannah said. “It gave me good confidence, because that gave me the No. 1 rank for states. That’s a good morale boost.”

Waterville senior Madison Yakimchick (13.10) got a boost as she edged teammate Sadie Williams (13.19) for a victory in the girls 100. Teammate Kara Anderson (34-3.50) won the triple jump, while Yakimchick (33-3) finished second.

“I hope to get another state win,” Yakimchick said. “I won states in the long jump my sophomore year. I’d like to win states again with a 100-meter (title) my senior year. I’ve just been chipping away at my time and hopefully win.”

Morse junior Shealyn Brochu won three events, the 400 (1:00.72), 800 (2:23.8) and 1,600 (5:18.36). Teammate Sarah Ouellette set a KVAC record in the pole vault, clearing a height of 11-7.50. The previous record was 11-7, set by Cony’s Lindsey Folsom in 2013.
