DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have found an old family bible that belonged to Mrs. Miranda Glover, who died in 1901. I would like to return it to her family if they are out there. Listed in the bible are her children: Emma, Isaac, Annie, Charles, Frank, Carrie, Edwin, Herbert, and Nellie.—David, no town
ANSWER: This is so good of you to attempt to find the family who once owned this precious keepsake. I’ll post this again and in the meantime, please let us know if you find who you’re searching for.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Poland Historical Society will be visiting the Empire Grove Campground located off Empire Road in East Poland on Sat., July 13 at 10 a.m. The Rev. Raymond Anderson will present the history of the campground, followed by a walking tour of the grounds.
Established in 1834, camp meetings continue to be held, maintaining the campground’s original purpose and mission for 190 years. This event is free and open to the public.
We also want everyone to know that the Poland Historical Society Museum is open every Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. throughout the summer. The museum is in the former Poland Corner Schoolhouse, beside the Poland Town Hall.
Feel free to stop in and explore our collection of Poland history. Society members will be there to answer questions and accept any Poland memorabilia you may care to donate.—Dave, Poland
ANSWER: This sounds interesting and thank you for the invitation to bring items to donate. It’s so important that we contribute to our history and our sense of place in the world. To have the opportunity to view memorabilia of the town displayed together brings more of an understanding of what the town of Poland is all about. I hope you’ll have good attendance throughout the summer.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for your support of the Pleasant Street Drop-In Center. We wanted to share with the community that on June 15, we welcomed our 10,000th unhoused guest to our program.
Since February 2022 we have provided breakfast and lunch, clothing, tents, tarps, foot care and case managers to our unhoused guests on Wednesdays and Saturdays, all with volunteer staff. During the first few weeks of operation we had very small numbers, and last Saturday we served 104 guests.
We could not do this without community support and the numerous hours provided by our awesome volunteers.
So thank you to all who have volunteered and donated clothing and other items to sustain our program.—Virginia, Lisbon
ANSWER: I’m so impressed with you all and so proud to take a small part in the effort to provide unhoused folks with some creature comforts. You all serve your fellow men and women with great compassion, patience and love as you provide the necessities of life and help to point people in need in the right direction. Thank you for your service and your time. Keep up the good work!
