AUBURN — Flames destroyed an abandoned two-story farmhouse on Riverside Drive early Monday morning, according to a Tuesday afternoon news release.

Fire Department Deputy Chief Matthew Fifield said crews responded within five minutes of several calls around 1:09 a.m. Monday for a large fire at 1408 Riverside Drive. The wood-frame house was known to be long vacant, he said.

Some calls reporting the fire came from across the Androscoggin River in Lewiston.

“It took crews several hours to extinguish the large fire and needed assistance with water from mutual aid departments,” Fifield said.

There were no injuries, and the cause is under investigation by the Auburn Fire Department and Office of State Fire Marshal.

Assisting Auburn fire crews were departments from Lewiston, Minot, Mechanic Falls, Durham, Pownal, New Gloucester and Turner.

Fifield said anyone with information on the fire can submit information anonymously by calling 1-888-870-6162.
