Homeless people have been introduced to Meadowview Park in Lewiston.
For whatever reason, homeless people have been allowed to move into units at Meadowview low-income housing that has typically been reserved for the elderly. Lewiston Housing Authority changes rules and requirements as it sees fit, but it used to be required that one must be at least 62 or disabled to be considered.
Of the people who have moved in, only one is older than 62. The rest range from 20 years old to about 35.
What they share is homelessness. They are given free housing, free medical care, and money for food and cigarettes. They give nothing for all the freebies. None of them work, nor are they expected to.
The “regular” tenants are not friendly with these new tenants, and the favor is returned.
What happens to the usual elderly folks who want to get into Meadowview? I don’t know.

We believe it’s important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
