LEWISTON — Police are investigating a shooting that occurred Friday night on Rideout Avenue, according to a Lewiston Police Department Facebook post.
Several people reported hearing gunshots around 9:40 p.m. Friday in the Hillview Apartments at 77 Rideout Ave.
Officers arriving at the scene identified a vehicle that was struck by a bullet and it appeared no one was injured in the shooting, the post said.
Several people commenting on the post indicated a person was seen running from the scene on foot.
Police were not available for comment.
The investigation is still active and anyone with information should contact Detective Craig Johnson at cjohnson@lewistonmaine.gov.
This is the second shooting reported on Rideout Avenue, and one of many, in the past week. Sahal Muridi, 17, of Lewiston was found dead July 14 after gunshots were reported at Rideout Avenue around 10:30 p.m.
Just an hour later, shots were reported at 54 Knox St. where police found over a dozen shell casings and several bullet holes in surrounding buildings.
On July 13 around 8:20 p.m., police responded to reports of gun shots at 253 Blake St. Police found a firearm and shell casings in the roadway and a vehicle with several bullet holes. Witnesses at that scene told police a man exited a vehicle in the roadway and approached the building’s parking lot while firing at a vehicle.
The suspect and victim fled the scene in their respective vehicles.
It appears none were injured at the Blake and Knox streets’ shootings.
Police said they are not counting out the possibility that the July 13 and 14 shootings are related.
Lewiston police Chief David St. Pierre released a statement Monday indicating police would be ramping up foot and cruiser patrols in high crime areas.
He said police are exploring and utilizing a “wide range of crime prevention strategies.”
“It is the mission of the Lewiston Police Department to continue utilizing the necessary resources to identify and seek prosecution of those who commit violence in our community,” St. Pierre said in the release. “We cannot do the work we do without public support. We will continue serving with the highest level of service that the Lewiston Department is known for.”
