Richard B. Cote
LEWISTON – Richard B. Cote, also known as “Dick” “Dickie” and the “Sieve” passed away on July 12, 2024, in true form, fighting tooth and nail from complications due to a stroke.
He was born Jan. 10, 1938. He graduated from St. Dominic’s High School in 1957 and was the goalie for the notorious hockey team in the ’50s who won several state and New England hockey championships playing with his brother, Don Cote. His claim to fame was playing hockey without a mask, losing all his teeth to a skate and was one of Lewiston’s first native sons who earned a hockey scholarship to play at Boston University.
The city boy returned to Lewiston and married the farmer’s daughter, Rejeanne “Jean” Asselin. While he and Jean raised four kids, he continued to be involved in hockey through volunteering for local, state, and USA Hockey, as well as refereeing for the love of this game.
Dick’s profession in sales chose him for his gift of quick wit, humor, and ability to bull****.
Dick passed on his pragmatic thinking, common sense, and admiration of dark humor to his children, Stephanie M. Cote, Stephen R. Cote, Catherine A. Cote, and Jennifer M. Cote Pulk. Dick also enjoyed talking travel, quick banter, teasing of certain sport’s team choices and the stock market with his sons-in-law Guy Gagnon, Gary McLain and Mike Pulk. To the three grandchildren that would light up his eyes when they walked in the room, he has passed on his athleticism, perseverance, independence, and again appreciation for humor in challenging times, Samuel Cote Zashut, Mackenzie Richard Zashut and Autumn Landers Pulk.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at CMMC ICU and Andwell Hospice House for their patience, support, and professionalism.
A Celebration of Richard’s life will take place Friday, Aug. 2, at the Albert and Burpee Funeral Home in Lewiston, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., followed by a service at 5 p.m.
