LEWISTON — Police on Friday swarmed a Dill Street home after a call came in reporting a gunman running amok in the residence.

When they arrived at about 6 p.m., police said, they found no problems at the home.

A half hour later, police were still in the Dill Street area, checking with neighbors in case there were issues at another location. Early reports were that no trouble was found.

A police spokesman said officers expect to remain in the Dill Street area until they can confirm that the call they received was a false report. Police were also questioning people found in the area, but no arrests were made.

When police first responded to the area, they advised neighbors and at least one business to lock down — including an active Bingo game being played further down Pleasant Street. The Bingo hall locked down briefly until police provided an all clear.

The origin of the call that caused the drama was not immediately known. Police were investigating the possibility that the call was a case of “swatting,” a situation where bogus reports of armed situations are called in as a prank to cause a large police response to a specific location.

Although police responded to Dill Street with guns drawn, no injuries or other problems were reported.

The situation remained under investigation later Friday.
