At Mountain Valley High School in Rumford, the bumping and grinding isn’t limited to the dance floor. It’s in the congested hallways and it’s prompted a new policy this fall: No backpacks allowed during school hours.
Principal Tom Rowe said the packs weigh up to 40 pounds, clog the corridors and whack too many passersby.
“Kids like to congregate in the hallway and they say ‘Hi John,’ and they turn around and they’ve nailed somebody,” Rowe said.
So starting this fall the students are being asked to place their backpacks in lockers at the start of the day and keep them there until they go home. If a stray pack is spotted in the hallway after that, he said students would just be reminded of the new policy.
