LEWISTON — The delivery of the first of four giant transformers to the New England Clean Energy Connect converter station on outer Main Street will now take place Thursday night, officials said.
The latest schedule change, announced late Tuesday, states the massive transformer will be escorted from Auburn into Lewiston at 9:30 p.m. Thursday.
According to Lewiston city officials, the Maine Department of Transportation granted the project a waiver for the large transformer to be moved at night in an effort to minimize traffic impacts. Previous news releases on the move said the convoy will be moving at a “walking pace.”
The large transformer is being moved from Rodman Road in Auburn to the Lewiston substation at 1653 Main St.
In Auburn, it will make its way onto Washington Street South, Philomar Street, Washington Street North, Minot Avenue, Union Street, Center Street and onto the Veteran’s Bridge to Lewiston. The trek through Auburn is expected to take hours, officials said.
In Lewiston, the convoy will go along Russell Street, College Street, and Merrill Road to Main Street. Temporary road closures will take place along the route in both cities.
