AUBURN — The Drop-In Center at 169 Pleasant St. recently welcomed its 10,000th guest, Mary Cross. The center is celebrating two and a half years of providing meals and services for the unhoused community and those in need.
The center operates from the vestry of the Unitarian Universalist Church on Spring Street, as the staff wait for a transition to 121 Mill St. in partnership with the city of Auburn. The center, open from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays, provides breakfast and lunch, showers and laundry vouchers, and has case managers to assist guests with needed services, according to a news release from Virginia Starbird, DIC Board secretary.
On Saturdays, the center is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the same location. The clothing store is open that day, also offering necessities like tents, sleeping bags and toiletries.
During the school year, the center provides a foot care clinic staffed with nurses and a supervising physician, and on Wednesday, Aug. 14, will be offering Hepatitis A vaccines to its guests with MaineCare.
The center, staffed by volunteers, receives support from many Lewiston-Auburn business and individuals.
