PORTLAND — A Lewiston man pleaded guilty Tuesday in U.S. District Court to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm.

On March 15, authorities conducted a probation check and sought to interview Bret Binette, 19, at his home, according to court records.

When they arrived, they saw Binette driving a motor vehicle, which was searched. A 9mm pistol was recovered during the search, court records said.

Investigators found that Binette knowingly possessed the gun.

He was prohibited from having a firearm due to a 2023 conviction in Androscoggin County Superior Court in Auburn for criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon.

Binette faces up to 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 for the crime, plus up to three years of supervised release.
