The Piscataqua River Bridge has been reopened after traffic was backed up around the New Hampshire and Maine border Thursday morning because of a shooting.

Both northbound and southbound lanes on Interstate 95 bridge are no longer blocked, according to Maine State Police. According to Maine Department of Transportation data, an average of 77,770 cars cross over the bridge on a daily basis.

The Sarah Mildred Long Bridge and the Memorial Bridge connecting Portsmouth and Kittery are experiencing heavy northbound traffic, according to New England 511 traffic maps.

According to the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office, police shot and killed a man on the bridge early Thursday morning. Officers then found an 8-year-old child who had been fatally shot inside the man’s car. New Hampshire officials say that the man killed a woman at a home in Troy, New Hampshire, overnight before driving to the high-rise bridge on the border with Maine.

The exact circumstances of the incident, including the child’s death, are under investigation.
