TURNER — The final week of the preseason of high school football featured a marquee matchup between the defending Class A champion, Thornton Academy, and the Class C champion, Leavitt, on Friday at Libby Field.
The Golden Trojans defeated the Hornets 57-21, but Thornton coach Kevin Kezal said the result of the game wasn’t the important thing about Friday’s scrimmage.
“We told our kids before, ‘We are going to be 0-0 at the end of it, but you are going to have a feel,'” Kezal said. “You are going to feel how your preseason went, or you are going to have some questions in the back of your mind whether there might be some issues we have to correct. It was a great preseason, the kids worked their tails off and we played pretty well tonight.”
Both teams’ coaches said the scrimmage was a good opportunity to get a final look at their teams before the regular season begins next week.
“We had some good series on offense, I thought we moved the ball very well at times,” Leavitt coach Michael Hathaway said. “We were able to score at the end of the half. I thought we did some good things on that side of the ball. I thought defensively we were pretty physical but we didn’t get off blocks real well. We are going to work on that this week for sure.”
The Hornets won last year’s regular season matchup with the Trojans, 35-21, and the teams played 7-on-7 against each other this summer.
Leavitt opens the season at Winthrop/Monmouth/Hall-Dale/Kents Hill next Friday, while Thornton plays at Bangor.
