WINTHROP — A Royal Street home was severely damaged by a fire Monday that drew firefighters from surrounding communities and sent up a plume of smoke that could be seen for miles.

The fire, at 72 Royal St., had burned through the roof of the one-and-a-half-story Cape-style home, the ell and the attached garage, and an exterior wall had collapsed by about 5 p.m., just over an hour after the first firefighters arrived.

No one was home at the time of the fire, first responders said, and initially no injuries were reported.

In addition to Winthrop Fire and Winthrop Ambulance, fire crews from Augusta and Monmouth as well as Manchester and Hallowell responded.

Royal Street, which runs parallel to Western Avenue, connects Main Street and U.S. Route 202, which is also state Routes 11 and 100.
