Season outlook: Caldwell said this season is about a senior-laden team coming together, making memories and showing up for their community. The team’s work ethic is paying dividends in the preseason with some well-fought victories. Staying consistent with defensive-to-offensive transitions and on-field communication will be key to the Bucks having the winning season. Caldwell said the team has been well-coached by Larry Thornton in past seasons and should be a squad that goes far in the playoffs.
DIRIGO COUGARS

Season outlook: Shennett said that 2023, his first season leading the Red Eddies, the focus was on changing the culture of the program. This season’s focus is on tactics and possession of the ball. The Eddies have looked sharp in preseason and are looking to build off that. Shennett added that the goal for this team is to achieve a winning record and hopefully have a run at playoffs. Defensively, the chemistry between center backs Lexi Kelsea and Rachel Penny will help create the backbone of the team. Layla Facchiano and Gabby Gerry, the 2023 Sun Journal Player of the Year, were the top producers last season, in terms of assists and goals. Violet Vincent in the midfield provides both an offensive and defensive presence from box to box.
GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER PATRIOTS
Coach: Meg Cosgrove (first year)
Conference: WMC; Class: B
Last year’s results: 5-10, lost in B South preliminary round.

Season outlook: The Patriots have a promising season ahead, Cosgrove said, with a group of talented and respectful players in every grade level. She said that the team prides itself on working hard all practice, all game and all season.

Season outlook: The Hornets return a blend of experienced veterans and newcomers who will fill major roles. The team worked hard over the summer on building teamwork and chemistry. Leavitt lost five one-goal games last season and finished one spot out of the playoffs. The Hornets hope their experience from 2023 will turn some of those close loses into positive results.

Season outlook: Kevin Albert said Lewiston is continuing to improve on its skill, passing and teamwork, and expects be a competitive team. There are a number of new faces, but also several returning players in key positions and a lot of athleticism. The Blue Devils hope to be difficult to play against and improve their offensive output in a difficult, top-heavy Class A North division.
LISBON GREYHOUNDS

Season outlook: The Greyhounds are returning to Class C and 11-on-11 after playing 8-player soccer last year. Lisbon has had a difficult time rebuilding its program, but this season has created a healthy team culture and have a solid foundation to begin building upon. With a young base of players, the Greyhounds plan to continue fostering growth in both numbers and skill. Solaya Russo led the team with 10 goals last season, Erin Coffin was next with six goals and Adeline Burkhardt contributed five. Goalie Victoria Babbin finished with 156 saves.
MONMOUTH MUSTANGS
Coach: Gary Trafton (18th year)
Conference: MVC; Class: D
Last year’s results: 8-6-1, reached C South quarterfinals.

Season outlook: The Mustangs are no longer in a co-op with Winthrop and will be competing in Class D South this season. After losing seven starters from last season, Trafton said the team is in the process of filling the pieces of the puzzle with the 26 players on the roster. Everyone is learning new roles and working together, and Trafton said the Mustangs will be a competitive squad once that happens.
MOUNTAIN VALLEY FALCONS

Season outlook: Having lost 10 players to graduation, this is expected to be a rebuilding year for the Falcons. They still have strong leadership, with this year’s seniors, and will use that to create a new identity for Mountain Valley soccer, Virgin said.

Season outlook: The Roadrunners’ keys to success will be to play as one unit and use purposeful movement on the pitch. Delcourt said the team’s strengths should be leadership and a commitment to get better every day, and an area to improve is movement off the ball. The team’s goals, he said, are to “gel as a soccer family, compete at the highest level and improve every day.”

Season outlook: The Vikings’ focus this year is helping newcomers transition into the team’s system. While they lost key starters, there are a few players ready to step up in a big way to fill those roles. Goalie Maddy Herrick and center back Gianna DeVivo are back for their fourth varsity season, and their voices and experience will go a long way to setting up and maintaining a strong defensive system.

Season outlook: The Knights are looking to be more competitive this year and are optimistic about their chances to turn the one- and two-goal loses from last season into wins in 2024. It won’t be easy, but Bustamante said this group has the talent and the determination to do it. Challenges for Poland this season include keeping players healthy and improving defensive play. Bustamante added that the WMC is extremely competitive, so the Knights are aiming to have six or seven wins for a shot at a playoff game.
RANGELEY LAKERS

Season outlook: The Lakers expect to again be competitive in their second year of 8-person soccer this season, Hawksley said.
SPRUCE MOUNTAIN PHOENIX

Season outlook: Spruce Mountain looks to bounce back and be more of a force in the MVC after a building year with a young team in 2023. The Phoenix have a good mix of younger players and seasoned upperclassmen, so they are looking to be more balanced in the attack in order to compete in every game. Spruce’s goals this year will be to control possession longer and finish scoring opportunities. Doing so will allow the team to stay competitive in every MVC matchup.
ST. DOM’S SAINTS

Season outlook: The Saints are hoping to build on their successful 2023 season. There is a focus and determination amongst the players that hasn’t been seen the past few seasons, Carnick said. The regular season will be a tough one for the Saints, with a lot of competitive games against strong Class C opponents. The team hopes that will prepare them for another deep playoff run.
TELSTAR REBELS

Season outlook: Having graduated a large portion of the starting lineup and with a new coaching staff, the Rebels are excited for a new beginning in 2024. Crooker said the team is aiming is to stay within range of last season’s record while focusing on team-building, cardiovascular endurance training and enjoying the game of soccer.
WINTHROP RAMBLERS
