Season outlook: Buckfield returns all of their offense except for Justin Lucas. Harvey and Keough ranked second and third on the team in goals scored last year and will do a lot of the facilitating. The biggest challenge, according to Kyle Rines, is that the Bucks need to retool their defense, which will including relying on some inexperienced players on the back line. However, Cayden Durgin will be a big help as a second-year goalie. The Bucks’ schedule is a mix of Class D and Class C MVC opponents with with four 8-person games. It should be a healthy mix that will help prepare Buckfield for the playoffs.

DIRIGO COUGARS
Coach: Matt Libby (first year)
Conference: MVC; Class: 8-person

Season Outlook: First-year coach Matt Libby is looking forward to the Cougars pickup up where they left off in their successful 2023 campaign. The majority of the roster are freshmen, so Libby is looking to the returning players to be the leaders on and off the field. Dirigo expects a challenging schedule but should be competitive in a tough 8-man South region.

EDWARD LITTLE RED EDDIES

Season outlook: The Red Eddies expect to play hard and be competitive for a playoff spot. Like last year, Max Thompson said, the beginning of the season will be difficult. If the Eddies can come out of that stretch with some positive results and optimism, that should set them up well to gain momentum and rack up wins. With a good core of returning players, Thompson expects the group to have high expectations and hold each other accountable.

GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER PATRIOTS

Season outlook: The Patriots have numerous players who took their offseason training seriously, according to Neil Carroll. That work has already paid off with a strong performance in the preseason. The freshmen and sophomores will be pushing for varsity minutes all year. Gray-NG is a young program, to some degree, and Carroll feels it is still in the process of rebuilding after graduating many key players over the past two years. The Patriots’ goals for this season is to improve their record and continue to work toward playing their best soccer in the middle to tail end of the season.

LEAVITT HORNETS

Season outlook: A small group of seniors and enthusiastic underclassmen are ready to work hard and keep the Hornets competitive this season. Leavitt has two strong senior goalies who are prepared to protect the net. In front of them is a lot of quickness and dedication on the mid and front lines. Coach Wendy Milliken said the players are set on making it to the playoffs.

LEWISTON BLUE DEVILS

Dan Gish said the chemistry within the group is excellent, and the players have worked hard during the offseason. Gish also said their dedication to improvement is evident, and they understand that every achievement is earned through effort and teamwork.

LISBON GREYHOUNDS
Coach: Shawn Rhoda (sixth year)
Conference: MVC; Class: C

Season outlook: Expectations continue to be high, and the Mustangs look to contend for another title run. Bingham Abbott, Sam Schultz, Jake Harmon, Rory Foyt and Will Hamel will need to lead the young but talented club. Freshman duo of Bryce Fletcher and Zane Foyt along with sophomores Vasili Bendo and Noah Schultz will be counted on to contribute to the scoring this season. The defense should be a strength of the club, according to coach Joe Fletcher.

MOUNTAIN VALLEY FALCONS

The MVC is strong again, and Cayer said it will be a good litmus test to see how the younger players adapt.

Season outlook: This will be a new season in many ways for the Roadrunners, with a new coach and the graduation of several pillars of the program during its recent run of success, which included the school’s first state title last fall. First-year coach Jason Wing said they are taking it one training session at a time and working towards unlocking their potential. Mt. Abram looks to bring a strong work ethic and pride to the pitch as they look to improve each day. Wing expects the Roadrunners to be competitive in each game and wants them playing their best soccer by the end of the season.

MT. BLUE COUGARS

Season outlook: Mt. Blue graduated a large number of starters from last year’s team that gave state champion Lewiston everything it could handle in last year’s postseason. The Cougars need to replace their entire back line and and goalie, as well as first-team all-conference selections JJ Greenlaw and Levi Bogar. Lone senior Kaden Smith along with junior Nate Zeliger will be relied on to to help guide this young team. The Cougars are an incredibly close group that has worked hard this offseason to help make a good run in a tough KVAC. They should be solid at creating scoring chances.

OAK HILL RAIDERS

Season outlook: Returning only three starters from last year’s team means Oak Hill is young and lacks experience. Coach Jeffrey Lemont said playing in the MVC with a pair of state champions, Mt. Abram (Class C) and Monmouth (Class D), will help the Raiders gain that experience. There will be growing pains early in the season, but the goal is to improve on last year’s record and make some noise in Class B South.

Season outlook: Despite graduating only one player, the Phoenix remain a young team. The goal this season is to enhance their soccer IQ in tactical training while at the same time developing fundamental skills. The club is eager to learn and excited to do well. Adam Gettle likes how the Spruce has performed throughout preseason training. This year’s team is well-rounded at fullback, midfield and forward. Every athlete brings something to the table, and Gettle is determined to use everyone’s skills, athleticism and knowledge this season.

ST. DOM’S SAINTS

What makes this team truly special, according to coach Darine Gnidehoue, is its leadership and camaraderie. He said the leaders set the standard with their actions, and every player is committed to supporting one another and ready to give their all on the field. The Saints expect the Western Maine Conference to be even more competitive this year, and they aim to be contenders for a Class D state championship.

TELSTAR REBELS
Coach: Nik Conrad (second year)
Conference: MVC; Class: 8-person
Last year’s results: 3-8-2, reached 8-person South semifinals.
Returning athletes: Juniors — Adam Stephenson (GK), Cyrus Mills (M/F), Connor Deprey (D), Tommy LaPointe (M/F), Mason Perks (D/M/F, Jake Zolad (M/F); Sophomores — Travis Decareau (F), Cameron Wright (D).
Promising newcomers: Nick LaPointe, Maceo Bartlett, Henry Perks, Connor Nguyen, Matthew Wakefield.
Season outlook: The sky is the limit this year for Telstar, according to Nik Conrad, who has been coaching the junior class since they were in sixth grade. The Rebels competed in every match and didn’t lose a game by mercy rule.

WINTHROP RAMBLERS
