POLAND — Town Manger Matt Garside told the Select Board on Tuesday evening that according to the town’s attorney, they cannot send amended property tax bills.
At a recent meeting of the directors of Regional School Unit 16, Business Manager Stacie Field said she understood residents could petition towns for amended tax bills. She said this during the discussion of the third school budget proposal that will be voted on this month.
Property tax bills had already gone out and were based on a higher budget figure that was rejected twice by voters.
In other matters, the Select Board appointed Chris Macmahon, Colin Thorner, William Wulfken and Joanna Pineau to the newly formed Broadband Committee.
The board established a five-member Broadband Committee on a request by Selectperson Maryanne Hawkes, who will act as liaison. The committee will explore the possibility of establishing a town-managed fiber-optics service to provide internet coverage throughout the community.
One more member is needed, as well as two alternates.
The first organizational meeting is scheduled for Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. in the town conference room.
In another matter, the board accepted the bid of $237 per haul of waste to Maine Waste-to-Energy in Auburn and $267 per haul of recyclables to Casella by Almighty Waste of Auburn.
The board also approved a $5,000 donation to the Community Economic and Development Committee toward sponsoring Poland Heritage Day, Sept. 28.
Jane Pentheny was appointed to the Library Committee.

We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
For those stories that we do enable discussion, our system may hold up comments pending the approval of a moderator for several reasons, including possible violation of our guidelines. As the Maine Trust’s digital team reviews these comments, we ask for patience.
Comments are managed by our staff during regular business hours Monday through Friday and limited hours on Saturday and Sunday. Comments held for moderation outside of those hours may take longer to approve.
