LEWISTON — A local man was taken into custody Friday afternoon following a brief standoff outside a home at Oak and Blake streets.
Police were called to the scene shortly before 5:30 p.m. for a report of a man acting strangely in the area.
One man who lives near the scene said the man was in the street yelling that he wanted his paycheck and shouting other complaints. When police arrived soon after, the man fled into his home at the corner of Blake and Oak streets.
Police quickly surrounded the building and made attempts to communicate with the man. Also at the scene were friends and family members who tried to convince the man to come out.
The man’s boss was contacted and drove to the scene to deliver the paycheck. Police, some with guns drawn, continued to surround the house and used a public address system to advise the man that his paycheck had arrived.
About 6 p.m., the man opened the door to his home just a few inches to peer out. When he did, a police officer rounded the corner and forced the door open, ultimately subduing him and getting him into handcuffs.
Some family members audibly complained about the manner of capture, but the man soon emerged, unhurt, cuffed and with a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
The identity of the man was not immediately available. It was not known if he was going to be charged or taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.
Several people who live in the area, behind the Lewiston Fire Department, were unable to return to their homes while the standoff was underway.
One man was out walking his dog with his son when police first converged on the area. He waited out the standoff on the lawn next to the fire station and returned home when it was resolved 30 minutes later.
The incident remained under investigation late Friday.
