The residents of Minot, Poland and Mechanic Falls need to come together Tuesday, Sept. 17, and support the recommendations of the Budget Committee and School Board for the third attempt to pass the Regional School Unit 16 budget.
At this point in the process all the issues surrounding the local-only debt formula and evaluation cannot be updated or fixed; that process will need to be reevaluated during the next year. Letters to our state representatives need to be done by residents to reevaluate their thoughts about evaluation of “your property is higher and you can pay more” — that is simply untrue and hurting the taxpayers of not only this RSU but others around the state.
All tax commitments by the three towns are done, and our residents are responsible for those payments based on the failed budget numbers of the second attempt. No one will see a credit or change until next year.
As a selectman of Minot and a Budget Committee member, we hear these issues loud and clear but need to move forward to pass the budget so we can clear a path to next year and working together to solve the issues collaboratively.
