Frank Ferrel, widely regarded as a leading authority on North American traditional fiddle music, returns to the Oasis of Music at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 11, at Trinity Commons in Lewiston. Ferrel will be accompanied by Greg Boardman on guitar and second fiddle.

The program will include music from throughout the US, Canada, and Scandinavian countries, including some of Ferrel’s own compositions. Along with his collecting, publishing and music research, Ferrel is considered to be one of the leading American fiddlers performing today. He began his fiddling career at age eight, first influenced by his grandfather, a traditional musician and native of Ohio and West Virginia. In the 1970’s, Ferrel rekindled his interest in traditional fiddle music under the influence of local Irish, French-Acadian and Canadian Maritimes fiddlers. Among many of his career highlights he has been featured on “A Prairie Home Companion,” appeared as a guest performer with top Celtic band Boys of the Lough, and was inducted into the North American Fiddlers’ Hall of Fame.

The Oasis of Music is a weekly music series of performances of roughly thirty minutes, running from September to May. Admission is free, with donations accepted. The musical genres vary greatly, in largely, but not exclusively, acoustic formats. Trinity Commons is located at 247 Bates St., Lewiston. For more information, call 207-344-3106.
