LEWISTON — Lewiston offense got contributions from familiar and new faces in Tuesday’s 4-1 Class A North boys soccer victory at Don Roux Field at Lewiston High School.
Senior Tegra Mbele scored a first-half goal, while his brother, Mechi Mbele, who’s also a senior, and sophomores Fernando Bengue and Abdirauf Hersi added goals in the second half.
“I feel like we had composure, we played good, we possessed the ball,” Bengue said. “We just needed to finish the ball more, but we did good.”
Brunswick coach Mark Roma said the Dragons made too many mistakes.
“Lewiston is a good team, and you need to defend 100 percent of the game,” Roma said. “When you make those mistakes, they are going to capitalize, and they did.”
Tegra Mbele opened the scoring for Lewiston (2-0) in the 15th minute when he received a one-touch pass and slid the ball past Brunswick goalkeeper Edgar Meardon.
“It’s stuff we always work on practice, one-touch, one finish,” Tegra said through Bengue, who translated.
The Dragons (1-1) created a scoring opportunity shortly after Lewiston’s goal, but Blue Devils goalie Will Diamond-Stanic stopped the volley into the box.
Tegra Mbele had two chances to extend the lead in the first half, but, first, he missed wide on a partial breakaway. Later, his low shot hit the frame square.
“I mean, he could have had three in the first half; and the finishing is going to come,” Lewiston coach Dan Gish said. “Obviously, that’s going to be a focus. It’s always part of our training plan. But, you know, it’s something that we’re going to hopefully get better at.”
The Blue Devils created another opportunity at the buzzer, but a Brunswick cleared the ball before it could cross the goal line.
Early in the second half, Bengue’s 30-yard boot sailed under the bar for a 2-0 Blue Devils lead.
“I always used to practice my shots at Bates,” Bengue said. “Today, I had a chance to take it, and I did my job.”
After a Lewiston yellow card, Judah Greenwald got Brunswick on the scoreboard when he headed the free kick past Diamond-Stanic in the 10th minute of the second half.
“My hats off to these guys, they grinded, there was no quit,” Roma said. “That’s the piece I am going to take away. They worked their tails off the entire 80 minutes. There was no quit. But we aren’t good enough — right now.”
It didn’t take long for Lewiston to respond and go up 3-1 on Mechi Mbele’s goal.
“Yeah, the composure to not sit down and feel sorry for yourself, to get right back on track and answer,” Gish said. “That’s a good quality to have as a team mentality.”
Another long-distance shot found the back of the net for Lewiston when Hersi scored, extending the lead to 4-1 midway through the second half.
“You can’t give up those goals,” Roma said of the long-distance tallies. “You can’t give up those types of goals and expect to win.”
Lewiston will host rival Edward Little (0-0-1) on Friday, and Brunswick will take on Class B South power Yarmouth, also on Friday.
“The schedule makers didn’t do us any favors, but that’s OK, you need to play them all,” Roma said. “… These are games that will get us where we want to be for tournament time.”
Gish is excited for the rematch of last year’s Class A North semifinal against the Red Eddies.
“Oh, looking forward to it,” Gish stated. “You know, I love those guys. It’s a fun rivalry. You know, those guys I coach with, I have a lot of respect for them and their kids. Lewiston and EL, it doesn’t get any better. So, hopefully, we’ll have a good show.”
