NORWAY — The Select Board is recommending a property tax rate of $17.78 per $1,000 of assessed valuation for assessor John O’Donnell’s consideration.
It’s an increase of 21%, or $3.08 from last year. Taxes on a home assessed at $200,000 would be $3,556, an increase of $616.
The higher rate means more money for the undesignated fund balance, or surplus, to offset tax abatements or unexpected expenses.
The board also voted Thursday to hold a special town meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at the municipal office on Danforth Street to ask voters to transfer funds to pay for the installation of the Emerson Road and Crockett Ridge culverts.
“It’s just a matter of paying for it, then some of it goes back after we’re reimbursed,” interim Town Manager Jeffrey Campbell said.
In another matter, the Fire Department was authorized to close Beal Street, from Danforth Street to Lynn Street, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 4, for annual hose testing.
The Maine Department of Transportation will hold a workshop at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the town office complex. Selectmen will meet after the special town meeting.
