PHILLIPS — Because you asked – yes, there is a golf course in Phillips. Justafield Golf – an 18-hole par-3 course — is located on Route 4 across from what used to be Ron’s Texaco and Edmunds Market (now Sandy River Shop ‘n Save).
Winona Davenport points out this is not a driving range as some people believe as they pass by. Justafield has approximately three acres of field, woods, hazards and the prefect place to learn to play or to hone the game.
Strategically placed are three backyard greens (meaning not perfect), after all it is a field. Each green has three flags, red-white-blue. Play three times around the field for nine holes, another three times for 18 holes. Surprisingly, there are 18 separate tee boxes ranging from 75 yards to 167 yards. Most tee boxes have a chair or two for those who need to sit for a moment.
Fees at Justafield are reasonable. Membership for the season is $50. Membership allows the golfer to play or practice any time of day except when a league is playing.
Rates for the league are:
Sunday 11 a.m. $6, non-members $10; Monday 4 p.m. $1, non-members $2; Tuesday 5:30 p.m. $1, non-members; Wednesday 10 a.m. $1, non-members $2. Currently having 20 plus members possible capacity for a 9 hole scramble $15.
Both night leagues change time as darkness arrives early. Members are from Phillips, Madrid, Farmington, Strong, New Vineyard, Kingfield and Rangeley. A guest is always welcome.
Justafield is a walking course, pull carts are available. There are three privately owned riding carts. All efforts are made to accommodate anyone unable to walk by pairing them up with a team using a cart.
Clubs are available for pop in visitors or someone who would like to learn to play without the expense of buying a set until they know if they like the game.
