AUBURN — Gabby Gerry and Layla Facchiano provided the offense for the Edward Little girls soccer team, as the senior scored two goals apiece in a 5-1 rivalry win over Lewiston on Saturday.
Facchiano, normally a midfielder, moved up to the forward line for the game, and the change in positions paid off.
“I usually play midfield, so I really don’t ever play striker or forward,” Facchiano said. “That was kind of motivation for me because I really wanted to score. In our first game at home, we played Camden (Hills), and we got mercy-(ruled, 9-2, Tuesday). So we kind of just wanted to come out and play how we know we can play.”
The game ended with 9 minutes, 11 seconds remaining when a Lewiston player was struck in the back of the head with the ball after a teammate attempted to take a long-distance shot.
The player was taken off the field on a stretcher after an ambulance was called to the field for assistance, and the game was called off.
Early in the game, both teams got on the scoreboard thanks to own goals.
Less than a minute into the game, a Lewiston corner kick bounced off an Edward Little defender for an own goal.
Next, Edward Little’s Gabby Gerry sent the ball into the 18-yard box, and it deflected off a Lewiston (0-3) defender into the net for an own goal.
“Yeah, you know, two own goals, one for each team, is unfortunate,” Edward Little coach Tyler Shennett said. “But it’s soccer, mistakes happen, and how we adapt and adjust from that is kind of what matters.”
Midway through the opening half, the Red Eddies (1-1) took a 2-1 lead when junior forward Kaisley Marquis made a pass in the box, and the ball ricocheted off Facchiano past Lewiston keeper Emily Derosiers.
“We did a really good job crashing the net, which is something that we’ve kind of been struggling with a little bit,” Shennett said.
Josie Gagnier had two chances for Lewiston in the 35th minute to even the game, but Edward Little’s defenders cleared the ball from the goal.
Shennett gave credit to the Red Eddies’ defense.
“Yeah, I thought defensively, we were really solid,” Shennett said. “Rachel Penny and Jenna Shea, my two right-sided defenders, Jenna and Rachel both did a great job putting their bodies on the line and having some huge stops, which we, you know, if it wasn’t for them, there could have been goals that were created from that.”
Gerry’s low shot early in the second half snuck between the near post and Derosiers for a 4-1 lead.
Facchiano notched her second goal of the game when she put home a Gerry cross for a 5-1 lead in the 11th minute.
“Well, I really think it was just because we’ve known each other for so long, so everything just kind of flows,” Gerry said of the chemistry with Facchiano.
