AUBURN — A 9-year-old boy who was riding a scooter was hit by a car Saturday afternoon when he entered Newbury Street from Laurel Avenue and did not heed a stop sign, according to police.

Deputy Chief Tim Cougle of the Auburn Police Department said Charmarke Kayad, 40, of Lewiston was operating a 2012 Dodge Challenger at low speed on Newbury Street at 5:53 p.m. when the boy rode a scooter in front of Kayad’s car.

Cougle said the boy failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Laurel Avenue and Newbury Street.

The boy was conscious and alert when emergency workers arrived, Cougle said. He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for evaluation.

No charges have been filed, Cougle said, and the crash remained under investigation Sunday.
