LOVELL — Daniel Sipe and Reed Mclean, co-founders of the new avant-garde, nonprofit Lights Out Gallery of Norway, plan to speak about their mission of connecting Maine artists and their circles to a broader community at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, at the Charlotte Hobbs Library, 227 Main St.
They will speak about their experiences filming interviews with established and emerging artists in Maine and their goals for the gallery’s future. Light’s Out Gallery, lightsoutgallery.org, is a nonprofit art collective which showcases Maine artists, both established and emerging.
Different from a for-profit gallery, they locate artists through a “call for artists” each spring and collectively show work through organized pop-up exhibits in spaces throughout Maine. They are also working on restoring a former snowshoe factory on Tanner Street in Norway, the last operating wooden snowshoe factory in the state.
Working from grants and private donations, with the help of their board and community volunteers, the team is organizing major renovations to the future home of the gallery and artist collective. Besides a large gallery space, the complex houses a dance studio, and the founders plan to develop individual artist workspaces as well as a collaborative wood working studio, according to a news release from the library.
The Speakers Series is sponsored by a grant from Norway Savings Bank.
